Blogging from Sendai, Japan

May 19, 2011 19:35

Well, since I'm going to be going to Sendai, Japan for a volunteer/gospel preaching trip hosted by my school, I figured that I might as well blog about it. I will have a personal diary that I will already be keeping but in the interest of keeping people informed as well as for those who might be wondering what exactly the situation on the ground there is like right now, I'll be posting in through several mediums. One is through email reports to my schoolmates and family. The other is through twitter, for more at-the-moment kinds of things. The third will be this. I'm sure eventually there will be a massive picture post but I hope to be able to upload and include pictures into these posts on a daily basis. We'll see what happens.

Some background and plans for this trip:

Since the March 11th earthquake in Sendai, Japan, there has been a great need for volunteer work to help clean up the area. At the same time, there is the realization that the people of the country have been shaken in a way like none other since the time of World War II. It is the sincere desire to reach such ones that they may find meaning and peace within their lives with the gospel of God, the testimony of Jesus Christ His Son.

As it is, my school has been sending teams to join other Americans from around the country in order to join in a volunteer effort for reaching the people in not only helping them in their material possessions but also in giving them comfort in as human a way as possible. So far, 6 teams have been sent.

This trip, my team from my school consists of six and we will leave from Leave from LAX headed for Narita Intl at noon. 5 second-years and 1 first-year.

There, we will join with 1 from Berkley, California, 1 from Long Beach, California, 2 from Austin, Texas, 1 from Seattle, Washington, and 1 from Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1 from Madison, Wisconsin, and 1 from Charlotte, North Carolina. This brings the total team of Americans sent to 14. There are currently 2 full-time Americans who have been there for the last 2 weeks. There are also 2 sent from Taiwan who have been there since right after the earthquake.

So, that's it. I'll be flying out tomorrow.
