the instant

Maybe I've noticed it before, and have forgotten or pushed it to the edges of my memory, but tonight I noticed something.

Think of someone. Instantly you get a feeling in your heart about how you feel about them.

I'm not talking about a crush, but think of your friend or cousin or sister or parent or anyone you really love and have a strong relationship with. When you think about them, you know you do, and you know you will always love them. A kind of peace falls over your heart for that instant.

So what about the person that you think about and you get a sinking feeling, like you know they expect more from you and your relationship than you feel comfortable giving? What do you do when you don't want to feel that way about them and you really want to like them? Do you make believe you feel it anyway? Will the feelings develop, or are you just tricking yourself into building a cage you can't get out of without damaging one of your hearts? If you work at it, will they come?

The feeling in your heart that you get the instant you think of someone- can it be changed by willing it to change? Does it have to be subconscious and gradual, or do you have to work at it?
Is it worth the effort?
