WOW. Just WOW. May I recommend this show to watch for anyone who hasn't yet watched it?
This will still be slightly incoherent, because I can never really write down my reviews logically.Wait, these are not even reviews really, more like impressions? Squees? LOL
Anyway, the wait was worth it. I know some of the fans have been waiting for more than a year (close to two?) but in my case, I've been waiting for six months, and it's TORTURE.
The start was hilarious. You have all these heightened tension and all the major players in the pool and there's a bomb and a psychopath and a sociopath and an ex-army doctor and you expect things to go KABOOM and....... there's Bee Gees. *laughs a little hysterically* And a little distraction and our heroes are saved by the whims of an-unknown-player-at-this-point It's so anti-climatic that it's perfect.
The passage of time and the culmination of the 'little' cases are nicely done, I think. All the nods to the ACD canon, and a little slice of domesticity for both Sherlock and John. And they even managed to sneak in the hats! Hahahahahaha Benedict looks really weird in it, and in the 'paparazzi pics'. Which is weird in itself, because the pics that was sent to Irene Adler were of lower quality and he looks gorgeous in them. Of course, he was wearing just a sheet then, so I might be biased LOL
Irene Adler. Wow. Initially I was afraid of her introduction, because does it mean that Sherlock and John will have lesser screen-time together, or detract them from other already-introduced characters, and in a way it did, but this was forgivable, because Irene Adler is GOOD. Also, I think I saw a pic of her during the Screening earlier in Dec and I thought, this woman is pretty, but does she have that chemistry with Benedict, and HOLY CHEERLEADER BATMAN, they do! The air was crackling with it,
Actually, digressing slightly, I think this entire episode is not really SEXUAL as much as it is SENSUAL. All the teasing, the violin music, the soft touches, the lingering gazes, the 'chaste' kisses, the invitation to 'dinners'.... *fans self* Even the little peek-a-boos of all the skin serve to make me feel more languidly decadent than outright heat. And I'm so glad that Benedict Cumberbatch is not shy in baring himself, because his body is fine. And now that Sherlock has been undressed, shouldn't John be undressed sometime soon as well to even the score?
Just saying. :p
I love the light in this episode as well. Everyone looks brighter, even though there are still people dying, and the interactions between the characters are not entirely cheery all the time. But of course, when they are in those serious talks, the light changes to suit the mood, and the last scene of Sherlock and Mycroft and Adler, that was simply gorgeous.
I love the scenes between Mycroft and Sherlock, because man, Sherlock can be one petulant child, clearly seen when they were in the Palace. Poor Mycroft, because Sherlock is the only person able to reduce him to shouting instead of just being all mysterious and aloof and calm. Younger siblings do have that effect, speaking from experience. "Sherlock Holmes, PUT YOUR TROUSERS ON." "What for?" LOL That boy will be the death of Mycroft Holmes.
Mrs Hudson is simply a delight. She looks so frail and proper and then she did something so BAMF that yeah, that's one housekeeper landlady that you wouldn't want to mess with!
John. Ah, John. He's in the back seat in this episode, and although I'm a little put out about that, everytime he's on the screen I did a little jig, because I love John Watson. He's solid and proper and have a wicked and weird sense of humor and he's always doing the right thing and yet allow Sherlock to lead him astray occasionally and even though he's kidnapped and he didn't know where he's been taken to he's still so matter-of-fact about it and he's so cute about being so protective of Sherlock and Mrs Hudson and forever optimistically finding a girlfriend even though he knows it wouldn't work.... you can see I like him here.
Ah, there are so many things going through my mind, but I shall stop here. Maybe in another post when I do a re-watch.
