weekend of wonderment

imagine if you will, a weekend alone with the girlfriend. imagine also if you will, a soggy campsite, wet firewood and a sick girlfriend. some would just immediately give up and call the weekend a total bust, but not me friends. instead of taking these signs as an omen i've royally pissed off some kind of deity i instead found a kick ass diner, the corning museum of glass (hereafter referred to as cmog) and a few wine tastings. let me begin at the beginning: all thursday brandy was feeling atrocious and the weekend forecast wasn't so good, without 50% of the party, how would a good time be had by some, let alone all. so thursday was a day of rest, despite what god may otherwise suggest. friday morning we woke up and brandy was feeling up to trekking down to camp. all day it was overcast and looked as if it would downpour at any minute. as we arrived at the campsite (after a quick stop to purchase some wet firewood - more on that later) it started to rain, and not just any rain. the kind of rain that signifies a future torrential, monsoon rain. we jumped out of the car and furiously set up the tent. the second the last stake impaled our driveway (of sorts) the clouds separated, and a chorus sang praises and light shown down on us from on high. then we tried to start a fire...
sure starting a fire sounds easy, and you'd be correct. however, for all you frontiersmen out there, let's make things interesting. step one: purchase wet firewood. make sure it's not just wet, but almost soaked in rain and sap. in fact, just go and chop down a sapling five minutes before you want to use it as firewood. step two: hit yourself a bunch of times until you barely remember your own name. this should ensure proper lack of memory of how to start a fire. step three: MAKE FIRE! after that doesn't work, drive to penn yan and have a wonderful dinner at penn yan diner, it's owned by lyman beecher. it was awesome, it was an original train car diner minimally added to. after dinner at which the waitress (the owners wife) was extremely friendly. we headed back to camp and that was that. unsuccessfully tried to start another fire.
next morning saw another visit to the diner and probably the best breakfast i've had in months. the off to a winery for a tasting. saturday was rather bland as far as vacation days go. in fact a fire would not start again so we went and bought charcoal, yes as pathetic as that sounds we actually could cook food and had a small fire going for a little bit. drank a bunch and called it a day. we hopped into bed and i won an argument over who had to cuddle whom with a rousing 2 to 0 victory in rock paper scissor. however, ever the bad loser, brandy decided to turn the tent into her own dutch oven. how lucky am i?
sunday morning we had to leave. and instead of heading to rochester we decided more south was the way to be. after getting to bath for breakfast (at a very swank mcdonalds) we countinued to corning. the cmog was interesting and as soon as i can i will post many of the cool pictures i took, including a glass chair called the "ghost chair". all in all i a wonderful weekend and i hope to get those pictures to you soon. later guys.
