The Oregonian posted the Declaration of Independence today, which I haven't read nearly enough. I read the whole thing today, though, and thought again what badasses those folks were to rebel like they did. It kind of makes everything I complain about in my life seem pretty pussified by comparison.
Driving across the entire country to get here was a reminder of just how big a footprint this country now has. I spent most of my life in an original colony, and came to somewhat inherit the spirit of having been there first. Venturing west through so much still undeveloped country side toward something largely unknown gave me a chance to think about what it must have been like for actual pioneers. Amazing!
Happy 4th of July, everyone! I have always felt lucky to have been born an American citizen. Although I often disagree with the leaders of this country, I truly appreciate that I live in a place where I feel free to disagree, in a family who also encouraged me to develop my own thoughts, opinions and values. Independence is an awesome concept. There are so many things that I take for granted here, but I'm trying to be more mindful of them today.
