Sharing files between multiple logins with user groups

Whoa there, setting up user groups is suddenly very complicated. I have no idea what I am doing, and /etc/groups appears to be quite ignored by the permissions system in this implementation of Unix!!!

I gave up a while back, but I just stumbled across the settings for groups, Mac style, in something called NetInfo manager. It has an scary icon depicting the Earth, turned grey, and covered in spider webs! Doubtless this is representative of the time scale involved in learning to manipulate the new system, compared to the sheer simplicity of unix groups.

I'm not totally sure why users and groups are now a network property, but I suspect it has to do with the fact that someone thought you'd never want multiple logins unless you were networked, with actual multiple people online. Instead of something much simpler, like creating a totally separate user on the computer, for yourself, that will have its own set of browser settings unpolluted by the fun things you do all day on the computer, for example.

I've got a hunch this is going to be as much of a hassle as NTFS and "cacls" was, just because the NetInfo Manager seems to include all sorts of new things to learn, or break while trying to learn. Sigh.
