Dead Sound on Mac Mini?

Dec 05, 2007 14:36

Sometime recently the mini stopped making noise when it booted.

Also, now, in control panels, the sound control panel says "No output devices found"

Guess my computer doesn't have any sound anymore.

On the bright side, this is sort of the "Final Solution" to all those problems with iTunes, I guess? Still, what the fuck? This thing shouldn't be broken already.

HMMM OK in all fairness, I moved recently. I hooked up some stuff in a hurry recently. I've noticed this problem, on and off depending on when I started my mac. After reading something about running a mini in a server room, I had a hunch. I shut down, pulled out the power cord, and restarted. The sound now works.

I think maybe if the monitor, the mouse, or the keyboard isn't plugged in when the computer is started - I'm still not sure which one is required - the sound device isn't included. This would make sense as a method to prevent a server room full of beeping computers, or anything else a Mini might be embedded in.

If thats the case maybe if there was a note to that effect explaining where the missing sound hardware went (and why "No monitor found at boot - Sound disabled for unattended mode") when I went into control panel and loaded the sound hardware, that could also make the computer easier to use.

Also, this exposed a bug in either Shockwave Flash or YouTube Player: without sound, I couldn't play more than a couple seconds of the movie (even in silence) without it locking up paused. As if it got plugged up waiting for the sound to come out or something!

UPDATE 2: Had some sound problems that were similar, but different, that also went away on reboot a little later
