Lunch Box 191: Mutancy on the bounty

Jul 28, 2006 21:07

Today's lunch has been brought to you by my mad scientist streak. The stir-fried vegetables include cabbage, broccoli, mushrooms, and sweet & sour lotus rootlets, cooked in olive oil. I would have included some carrot as well, but I was working with what was in the fridge at the moment. The mutant hot dog... well, you've seen hot dog octopi, which have curly legs? Cut hot dogs curl, with the inner edge of the curl being the skin. (The meat expands, the skin doesn't.) I was in a whimsical mood, and made a bunch of semirandom cuts all over the dog. I had no idea it would look like this after I microwaved it! It reminds me of the vines they draw around lettering in medieval illuminated scrolls. I packed the rice in a triangle shape for that reason; I thought it would set off the mutant hot dog nicely.

On the other side of the divider I have a pair of manjuu. It's been a while since I made those! This time I filled them with, not an pan, but chocolate covered macadamias, one each. They taste as good as they sound. Since they remind me of fruit with pits, like peaches, I call them drupe manjuu.
