okay so everyone wants to know how i do those washed out icons. so i've decided to indulge everyone on how i do it. and because
caitlin_potter pressured me into doing it (lol jk)
but im giving you a fair warning: although i try to make this as easy as possible, this is a fairly advanced tutorial. so please don't ask pesky questions like "i dont understand.." because i don't have the time to explain simple things to you. if you need help learning photoshop please go to
icon_tutorial. i learned by trial and error and so can you.
oh and i really don't know if this will work in psp...it MIGHT, at least some of the steps and kinda the jist but this is made for photoshop 7 (although im pretty sure you can do it in previous versions)
so without gilding the lily and without no more adu...i give you...
WHAT'S THE DILLIO?
okay well here's the ending image just to kinda show you what we're about to make:
so okay. i got the image from
here. however im not going to upload it because it is huge...but i'll let you have the base im about to tell you how to make so you can kinda try and follow along with me.
1. get the selection tool and make SURE you set it to fixed aspect racio and set it to 100x100 or else it'll look funky (i learned this the hard way)
2. okay so i picked out some of daniel and then resized it so it's now 100x100. it looks like this:
3. yay okay now time to do my default special stuff. i taught this in my previous tutorial but i'll do it again just because well im nice like that. lol. okay create a new layer and fill it with #050C3F and set it to exclusion.
4. we're getting there. now new layer again, fill it with #DCC7A6 and set it to color at 20%
5. now duplicate the top layer but change the style to color dodge, but keep the opacity the same
6. flatten the image and then duplicate the merged layers. set the duplicate to screen at 70%. merge the layers again and sharpen them.
that's what it should look like exactly (well...if you used that base then yes)
7. time for my special stuff. now, create a new layer and click on the gradient tool. now i found this gradient and im in love with it. you can download it
here. however, it looks like this if you want to know:
that's what it is.
HOWEVER. i set it to reflective. if you don't know what it is i made a screen shot to kinda show you how to change it. also i clicked reverse.
it should look SOMETHING (note: i did this later because i realized i didn't make a shot of this...so pardon me if it's off a bit) like this
and set that layer to screen
7. now merge the layers. okay now it's a bit too light for my taste. soooo i changed the brightness and contrast to:
brightness: -47
contrast: 45
and came up with
8. yay i like the colors now (they have to be dark so it lights...ah you'll see). okay so now here's where we start to use BRUSHES!! now the first brush i use, i made myself. I haven't released this brush yet because im still making other ones in that set so if you use this, please credit me! but to make it easier on you guys to find the brushes i used in this icon, i put both of them in one and you can download them for photoshop
here and psp8 (sorry but that's the only version of psp i have) can download them
here. the squarish one is mine and the weird texture one is
teh_indy's.
ANYWAY. create a new layer, make sure your foreground is white and use MY BRUSH
9.now merge (because it's just easier) and use teh_indy's brush on the left bottom of the image. use it twice though! once isn't enough.
merge again
10. time for text. now i love the band called Mest and they have a great song called "what's the dillio?" and hehe that kinda reminds me of what dan is thinking so i wanted to make a big W first though....so here are my font settings:
color: #694C5B
font: georgia
size: 48px
and put it kinda in the background and set the layer to soft light. i merged it again because you don't want that to get in the way of the other text.
11. okay now i didn't know about tweaking myself until i accidentaly came onto it so im going to show you how to get to it by a screen shot. i hope it helps, it is rather confusing. but even not using it, spacing works as well.
okay so for here are my settings for what's the:
color: #694C5B
font: georgia
size: 5px
tweaking: 1000
and for dillio (at least i think i spelled that right. ah well):
color: #494260
font: georgia
size: 6px
tweaking: 1000
and set both font layers to 75% opacity
you now have the finished product duckies.
phew *wipes sweat off of forehead* that was a tuffie.
comment/critisism is always welcome. remember this tutorial is geered to photoshop users
(YES THE FILES DO WORK NOW!! im soooooo sorry about that guys! i didn't know it wouldn't accept those file types so now everything is a zip.im really sorry!!)
