There was a moment last month when I felt super ambitious and wanted to read loads of queer YA and write about all of them in a wrap-up post at the end of the month. And then… I was so busy at work I almost missed the entire month. I still read most of the books I intended to read, though, and this was one of them.
There is one thing you should know about me, if you don’t already - I’m an absolute sucker for romcoms. I don’t necessarily like sappy stories or lovey dovey characters, but I do enjoy unrealistic romcom tropes. One of my favourite tropes? Normal person meets famous/royal person. The more out of this world, the better - I guess being aro, reading romance is even more of a fantasy than not, and the more outlandish the fantasy the better? I don’t know.
Either way, that was the reason why I picked up Rachel Hawkins’ Prince Charming, and read it in one sitting while I was in Sapporo. It was also why I enjoyed it a lot, despite the fact that it was kind of filled with random inaccuracies that made the plot even less believable than usual (which I suppose I’ll write more about if/when I write about Prince Charming.) Knowing that the sequel will feature a queer romance made me anticipate Her Royal Highness even more.
This book is about Millie Quint, who had been hoping to be among the first females accepted to an exclusive Scottish boarding school. When her best friend/almost girlfriend was kissing someone else, Millie’s desire to leave Houston as soon as she could even more. Luckily, she was good enough to get a scholarship from the school of her dreams. Unluckily, her new roomate was Princess Flora, who first appeared in Prince Charming as Seb’s sister (who had her /own/ best friend/sort-of-girlfriend, Tamsin.)
In this book, Flora and Tamsin seem to no longer be together. Flora and Millie didn’t get along at all, but this is one of those opposites attract, “falling in love with your roommate” books so of course they get into trouble and then got punished and spent enough time with each other to become each other’s new best friend/sort-of girlfriend. Honestly, they’re so cute together, I hardly noticed anything else. If you’re looking for a cute fluffy romcom, look no further. I really enjoyed this and will probably be rereading it from time to time.
