Random Memories

As I was walking across the parking lot this morning I noticed a small yellow object on the ground that looked like a faded Cheeto shaped like a J. A few steps past it reveled the true nature of the thing as its companion, a complete and whole weathered yellow plastic link from a chain lay on the wet pavement. In a flash I was reminded of my childhood and the yellow plastic chains we would hang around the cow's necks on the dairy farm when they were sick and taking antibiotics. We couldn't ship milk from cows taking antibiotics so we marked them with yellow plastic chains and dumped their milk, or took it home for ourselves since none of us had antibiotic allergies.

The cows always wore metal chains around their necks with a number tag on them for identification. Blue tags were my father's cows and red tags were my grandfathers. They all lived together in one big herd and I never really learned how the income was split. We sold the farm when I was in High School and I never was much involved in the business part of it.
