Mountain Chalet on the Col de Chavan

This Sunday I went snowshoeing with a French hiking group from just across the border. We went to this mountain called "Col de Chavan" (I think - I'm having trouble figuring out exactly where we were). It was near a tiny ski resort called Roc d'Enfer.

The hike was lots of fun, and the various hikers quite friendly as well. I especially like my ride: a Dutch couple who saw me waiting for the tram heading to the meeting point, and offered me a ride. Apparently the snow shoes were a dead give-away that we were going the same way.

I took tons of pictures heading up and down the mountain, and have posted selections on flickr, so if you'd like to see snow drifts and snowy trees, feel free. This one is from near the top. Just before the summit we came across this small stone chalet nestled in the snow drifts. Its owner - who apparently hikes in all his provisions, as there's no other way to access the place - was melting water on a small fire out front as we passed.

Other highlights of the weekend: I bought myself a half-fare pass for the Swiss trains. I plan to use it next weekend and venture a bit further afield. I still haven't decided where to go. And I also should probably work on convincing someone to join me... Hmmm...
