Author's Note: The idea for this came to me while watching Aladdin with my mother. Basically, I got inspired to draw Mohinder and Sylar as my favorite Disney couples, but once that idea formed I decided I also wanted to write something to go along with it. This is a first in a series of three Disney drabbles/fanart.
It wasn't easy to drag an unconscious man onto dry land, especially when your lower half was pretty much useless outside of the water, but with the current on his side, Mohinder had managed to get Prince Gabriel safely out of the ocean and onto dry land. The only problem now was whether or not he would live.
"He doesn't look good," Peter observed from a safe distance.
Mohinder frowned at his companion. Obviously their people's belief that all humans were dangerous savages had gotten to him too, in spite of all Mohinder's attempts to convince him otherwise. Yet Peter was right, Gabriel didn't look well at all. His skin was pale, almost white, and felt cool to the touch. Something told him that humans were not supposed to be cold. He frowned, laying the man flat on his back and pressing a hand against his clothed chest. He could feel his heart beating. It was faint, but it was there.
"He's breathing," Mohinder announced, watching the steady rise and fall of the human's chest. He would be fine... so long as another human came along and took care of him. It was the only way that the man would survive, yet Mohinder was reluctant to see him go. "He's so beautiful," he found himself saying, brushing a stray strand of hair out of Gabriel's face.
"Mohinder," Peter called, splashing his fins wildly to get his friend's attention. "Mohinder! We have to get out of here! Your father-"
"My father won't find out about this," Mohinder snapped, his eyes never leaving the prince's face.
He looked so innocent, so peaceful. Mohinder had never had the privilege of seeing a human this close before. He found them to be fascinating creatures and his naturally inquisitive nature left him with a desire to find out more about these strange land dwelling being. He collected what he could -- with Peter's help of course -- from sunken ships and things that had been thrown into the sea, but this... this was something completely different.
Coming across Gabriel's ship -- seeing him up there, quietly studying a pocket watch as the other humans danced and sang about -- was a once in a life time occurrence. Rescuing him from the explosion, saving his life was a reflex, an impulse that he would swear to his dying breath had nothing to do with how the very sight of him made his heart beat quicken. He smiled, trailing the tips of his fingers along the strong jaw.
"Mohinder, don't forget about Shanti," Peter warned. "Remember what humans did to your sister."
The merman frowned. Shanti's death was a tragedy, one that this human here had nothing to do with. From the looks of him, Mohinder would go as far as to say that this man hadn't even been born when the accident had happened.
"What would I give," Mohinder murmured, cupping that pale face in his dark hands, "to live in this moment? What would I pay to stay here beside you? What would I do to see you smiling at me?"
"Mohinder!" Peter shouted, panic in his voice. "Mohinder someone's coming!"
The sound of his friend splashing and swimming away was a faint echo in Mohinder's ears as he watched those thick eyelashes start to flutter. His voice was bringing him around. He had to keep speaking; he had to see those dark eyes staring at him.
"Where would we go, Gabriel?" he whispered, combing his fingers through black hair that was slowly starting to dry. "What would we talk about? We'd have such extraordinary conversations, wouldn't we? If only I could be part of your world."
No sooner had those words left his lips did Gabriel's limp hand come and grip his, the human's dark eyes meeting his own and suddenly Mohinder wanted nothing more than to bend down and kiss him. Yet he couldn't. He heard the other human's voice from just beyond the rocks and he knew he had to leave. He was lucky that Gabriel was still fairly daze, because he was too weak to stop him and when he came around completely, he'd probably think this whole thing was a dream.
The waves swept him up and carried him back into the water. He stayed under for a little while, swimming until he saw Peter's dark blue tail flickering back and forth in front of him. He emerged from the water to see his friend clinging to a rock and staring back towards the beach. Mohinder smiled, climbing on top of the rock to get a better look at what was going on. He saw a man with sandy blond hair and glasses dragging Gabriel to his feet. They spoke of something, and Gabriel turned towards him. He couldn't see him, Mohinder knew that, but it still sent a thrill through his being just to know that the human was looking for him.
"Can we go now?" Peter asked, tugging at the tip of Mohinder's purple fin. "I think we've caused enough trouble for today."
"This isn't the end of it Peter," Mohinder told him. "I haven't seen the last of him, I know it."
