1 What is your favorite costume era ?
My favourite will always be the 16th century. I just have an affinity with that century that seems to encompass costume, music, arts, history, people, architecture - I just feel "at home" there.
On the other hand, I have started dabbling in other periods of costuming - Regency, Victorian (Natural Form) and Edwardian (Titanic).
2 What is the part of the costuming process (research, sewing, etc) that you hate the most ?
Drafting and cutting out the patterns. I hate it, Hate It, HATE IT with a passion!!!
3 What is the part of the costuming process (research, sewing, etc) that you love the most ?
Hmmm - quite a bit of it I love:
the SQUEEEEE moment when a portrait of a costume screams out to be made; the research and design; natural fibre fabric hunt; choosing the colours; the attempt at authenticity of construction, fabrics and colours.
The tiny details that make it "right".
The fitting when this "sewn together jumble of fabric pieces" starts really looking like a gown. Lots of aspects really. And so many that it certainly outweighs the one bit that I HATE doing!
4 What kind of detail in a dress immediately catch your eye ?
When the colours, fabrics, fit/construction and trim are correct - that makes for a lovely dress. When the accessories, demeanour of the wearer, the hairstyle, makeup (or lack of!) and jewellery are correct as well - that makes an amazing dress and in my view a brilliant costumer!!
5 What dress (painting, museum item, etc.) started your love for costuming ? When ?
It was
Kentwell Hall that started it - I wanted to play there so I had to make a costume! That was in 1993 and I haven't looked back since!
6 What costume are you sure you would never do ?
Early Medieval.
7 How many projects do you have ? Count them all, not just the real planned projects, but also your dreamed ones.
Completed Projects:
12 16th century gowns encompassing middle Tudor, Elizabethan/Gentry and lower class.
4 Regency gowns (two of which both had spencers. One dress had embroidered neckline).
1 Victorian Natural Form Gown
1 Edwardian (Titanic) Evening Gown
1 Blackworked Elizabethan partlet
1 1540s Child's Tudor dress
1 Edwardian Gentleman's smoking jacket
(Total: 20).
Projects in planning/Dream costumes (at present):
1 1588 kirtle with doublet;
1 Regency Day dress with spencer and hat (for moi!);
1 Regency Evening/ball gown;
1 Natural form Gown (revamp);
1 Victorian 1840s day dress (with new corset);
1 new Edwardian Titanic evening gown;
1 drawn threadwork partlet;
1 drawn threadwork coif;
1 pair reticella cuffs;
1 reticella and blackworked chemise
1 French Revolution gown (one day in the dim and distant future);
1 reproduction 1590s gown (not saying which - so there!)
Total - 12.
This does not include the numerous costumes that are wandering around Kentwell that I have helped with! I lost count of those ages ago!
8 What was your very very first costuming try ? It could be a barely begin project.
This 1593 Blue Wool Gown, though I had previously made a small bumroll and a collar for a 17th century gown the previous year!
9 What costume do you madly love, but don't feel able to do ?
Much as I love the perod, I'm not sure I would like to do the really over-the-top "Dangereus Liaisons" style dress just yet!
10 Which of your follow costumers do you admire the most ? Why ?
Um - lots of people on my friends list but especially:
