I finished my travel book on the way into work and I'm not looking forward to my journey home without something to read. So I'm off to Waterstones after work tonight - but I fancy something a little different - what should I get to keep me entertained?

I just finished Perdido Street Station which is a slow starter but I really enjoyed it.

Oddly I lost a bit of interest in it once it got moving.

I ploughed on to the end and found it unremittingly grim and unpleasant to read.

It may not be a suitable bus ride read then.

To be fair, most of Mieville's books are the same. I -would- recommend The Scar as one of his to read on the bus, but I certainly wouldn't recommend the Iron Council.

I got Perdido Street Station but I couldn't get into it. It's been sat on top of the bog forever

I read Scar and Perdido Street Station cover to cover in no time, then stalled completely on Iron Council - definitely his weakest book IMO.

I love his imagination and his writing, but I don't particularly like his stories or his characters.
