I wrote this last year and just came across it...

I fall asleep to the hum of sirens
Following the beats of the gunshots in the streets
Screams make for terrible dreams
But it keeps me breathing
Keeps me breathing

The city seems to breath through the glass
Baby when you're breathing I've got class
Summertime doesn't carry it's own weight
So I'm sitting hard on the corner spitting rent

Carry me through empty rooms
And keep me guessing while it lasts
There's a city making money in the back of these dirty streets
Being clean is unseen in this murder scene
I'm feeling every beat of the hearts we bring
On the cover you see drugs being sold on the corner
But it's blood sweat and death as they're trying to make rent
It's surreal to picture this place as a home for the dying kind
But it's a living that they're selling for
Dragging the lake for years gone by

And this city sleeps through the worst of times
But I'll write every moment that passes by
Sick as hell when the train comes through
I'm a burden and I'm becoming the poster child of modern flaw

Purposely promise the promise of pastors
To the hoodlums and hood rats, the hustlers and harlots
Every time we take a shot for so much more
We find ourselves in the gutters of this tempered town
Someone once told us we had so much to give
But never once did we expect to have to give just to live
I've forgotten what we started this for
Dreams are just stories that keep us above ground
I've followed my breathing with cancer and sores
And lied to millions about the way I steal havoc and depend on the gore

Sing me to sleep sweet princess
I want to finish this day up with an excuse to wake up
In the morning
Dawn has become my favorite time for mourning
And like the seasons
Tried and true
There's no doubt in our minds that we'll change and come through

You don't have to sleep alone
But you have so much growing up to do
