Say ta-ta to Gilmore Girls. The 7-year-old CW show officially received its stop order on Thursday.
Though Gilmore had suffered creatively, its fate is the result of failed negotiations to re-sign stars Lauren Graham and Houston native Alexis Bledel.
A knowledgeable source said Thursday that negotiations with the actors went on "for months" and that "every effort" was made to re-sign them, to no avail.
The series, created and written by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, became a cultural touchstone for mothers and daughters, and its smart and snappy voice reflected just the tone its network, the WB (now the CW) became known for.
But the CW chose not to meet the requests of the Palladinos when it came time for them to their contracts, and some fans groaned that the show had lost its way under the supervision of new show-runner Dave Rosenthal.
"Announcing the final season of Gilmore Girls is truly a sad moment for everyone at the CW and Warner Bros. Television," said a joint statement from the two companies.
"This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters," the statement said.
The show's final episode will air May 15.
