CAUTION! This entry contains spoilers.
I can't believe that it's almost the end of May. This weekend brings up Memorial day, the day where all Americans should be in their backyards, having a little (or large) barbecue with the family/friends.
Or in the case of my dismay, at Greenfield village. Delighting in the recreation of the Civil War. Nothing to exciting...just a fairly large group of Union and Confederate soldiers along with their camps spending the weekend on grounds. Living in their little tents and building their little fires...and fighting their little war out on the green. The part that I find to be the worse is the fact that these insane Civil War Re-enactors not only take time out of their lives to travel around the country doing this for FUN, but they force their unfortunate offspring to participate! Their kids are running about in their period clothing, chopping wood, minding the tent, cooking over the fire, fetching water from the well...(okay, I made that one up, but still!) Poor little tykes....they never got a chance for a normal life. It goes on for days. There are horses everywhere....much to the amusement of my coworkers. The additional horses, which I might add DO NOT stay on the normal horse routes, make my ability to travel around the Village much more complicated. I'm basically in constant defense mode....a little jumpy bundle of nerves on the verge of hyperventelation. It's a long weekend...not long in the meaning of an extra day off long...but long in the sense of puttting in almost 40 hours in 3 days long. A few thousand, times two, visitors flocking daily each of course needing a hot dog...and a frozen custard. *sighs* Don't go thinking it's all bad...I do like part of it. I get to hear Taps beautifully played on the bugle.
Just keep in mind that The Henry Ford has ruined this holiday (amongst others) for me. I'm sure at one point in time this event was a very fun, little activity to boost customer appeal and celebrate the holiday. But like many other things that used to be pure and good, has turned into something that is hectic, crowded and obviously a way to make quick money. (Not that I can complain TO much about that, since that's how I stay employed...and therefore make my money!) It would just be nice for national holidays to roll around and not feel the sense of dread as they approach. It makes me feel somehow un-American.
So go out on your camping trips, have your barbecues. Donate to the VFW and get your artificial poppy. Open up your pool or cottage for the summer. Bust out the white pants, skirts and dresses. Even visit the grave of a loved one and set your flag at half mast.
Oh, that's right my spoiler: The North wins.
