Mixed Tape
Weighed down with words too overdramatic…
Now summer was truly epic, she had reached a point of enlightenment beyond the drought of boredom she had been ensnared with. Instead of traveling and finding the meaning of what it meant to live a blockbuster summer with the all so cliché enchantment of adventure, new friendships, and the perfect summer love, she had been able to lose herself in the character of Holden Caulfield, reading the novel for the seventh time may have made it lose some of the luster, but every time; she found a new way to analyze and sympathize with the strong fold character.
A cynical, depressed teenager on the margin of becoming an adult with the knowledge of some one well beyond his years. Maybe not all aspects of her life were the same to Holden’s. She wasn’t a teenager peeking to adulthood; she didn’t live a dark life in the depths of despair, nor did she want to be the catcher in the rye. She was just a 13 year old girl bored out of her mind desperate for any sign of adventure, in desire of anything magical to come swipe her off her feet and detour her from the excruciating boredom she was enduring, maybe she and Holden didn’t have that much in common, but the thought of them relating gave her the slim hope of having an larger-than-life summer.
She laid in the grass the music in her headphones on full blast staring up at the clouds, all her friends socializing and forming the clichés she would be excluded from when school start up again. This was the summer before high school and the most excitement she had seen was the continuous rise of temperature. She sighed after a while as the last song of Elliot Smith stopped and the cd ended, her head was pounding, and it really was quite hot. She grabbed her things and headed inside back to where in every corner laid frustrations masked behind boredom.
“Kris, sweetie” her mother called out.
“Yes, mom” she sighed.
“Come to the kitchen please.” Kris did was she was told and in a subdued manner walked into the kitchen. She sat on the stool and watched her mom slice some green apples in an angle and place it in a plastic container.
“Why don’t you take your brother to the park, that way you will be entertained for a while,” she nodded and began to call out her brother’s name “AJ, let’s go we’re going to the park.”
“Now be sure to watch him, you know what happened last time; here I packed some snacks.”
She rolled her eyes the kid gets stuck in a tree one time and she holds in against you for the rest of you life.
“Now AJ no monkey business this time okay?” she told her 4 year old brother. He nodded and continued to skip ahead of her.
“Looks like some one is moving into the Walker house” she said out loud. She had noticed some activity lately, people driving up to take a look at it, but it had been empty since she could remember. It was the house people through parties in, the house no one wanted to go near on Halloween, a mixture or complete joy and unparalleled fright.
Maybe if I’m lucky their just might be some one who will make my summer worth it moving in.
“AJ, don’t you dare take a step further!” she yelled running to catch up with her mischievous brother who was getting ready to cross the street.
“One more stunt like that mister and I’m dragging your butt back home”
“I’m telling mommy you said the b- word” he covered his mouth quickly. “You’ve heard worse, and I’m telling mommy to put you up for adoption” she retaliated.
A sudden pout formed on his face and she felt slightly guilty but he was a little monster sometimes. Sometimes she was angered by her parents having another child when she was so grown up, she wanted a brother and sister all through her childhood but now she was reaching the time in her life she wanted to go out there and explore, her parents expected her to be their personal baby service, who was she kidding she had nothing better to do; she really did love her brother.
They finally reached the park and her guilt had gotten the better of her “Listen kiddo, I’m sorry about saying those mean things, I didn’t mean them. You know I love you right?”
He nodded and ran off.
She shook her head and headed to one of the benches so she could clearly see her brother and keep him out of trouble.
After half an hour of watching her kid brother run up and down the playground she called him over so he could eat a snack and drink something.
“I’m coming” he called out running across the sand box as he jumped out of the sand box he nearly collided with a boy skate boarding, the boy loosing balance to avoid hitting him.
Kris quickly got up and helped the boy up “Are you alright, I’m sorry about my brother” she sighed grabbing AJ’s hand.
“Well he should know to watch where he is going” he said getting back on his skate board and riding off.
“How rude” she fumed pulling her brother alongside her.
