fanfic100 Like most things in life the beginning of one friendship usually is everlasting, however, given the circumstances it would appear that some friendships develop into something else. Veronica had no idea how many obstacles her life would undergo from first meeting Duncan Kane then shortly afterward Logan Echolls. Had she actually known all the hardships that were coming her way would she of honestly done anything different? Certainly not as the thought of loosing either boys both friendship and romantically would be a fate worse than death and surly she knew death all too well.
Now it was a completely different story as she found herself trying to deny feelings for one dear friend as she flourished them with the other, hate to state the obvious 'the grass is greener on the other side' metaphor but it's relevant to the story. Veronica could only watch as the love of her life, Duncan Kane, closed his eyes after having been through one of the longest nights in his life. You could undeniable give the boy credit for attempting to read 'Pride and Prejudice' in one sit in that dragged on for hours but he was only human, and as Veronica watched him slowly drift away as he almost neared the climax of the story then a gentle smile brushed over her face. She had got up slowly, taking the cover off of her and onto him and gently brushed her hand across the back of his head.
"I know how you feel.." She simply stated before turning back to her book. If it hadn't been for the ever so annoying cases she had popping in and out of her life then maybe she wouldn't have to pull all of these all nighters but she was slowly getting used to the her irregular sleeping patterns. Retirement had to hit eventually and until then sleep was just an option instead of a 'had to' sort of thing in Veronica's book.
Unfortunately for her nothing ever seems to stay quiet long enough for her to get anything accomplished and as she heard the front door slam open she merely jumped. Logan Echolls had stumbled into the living after having an all night binger with Dick and Beave, those three boys never did make for a good combination in the first place. Veronica tilted her head to the side to make sure Duncan was still as sleep, worriedly she walked straight into the living room to investigate what was happening. As she finally saw Logan slowly making his way over to his bedroom door her face went from worried to slightly upset.
"What?" Logan asked dryly as he caught the look on her face in the corner of his eye. He couldn't directly look at her given the state of mind he was in, it had been a rough night and to have her lecture him right now wouldn't help him any. If anything Logan always knew the punches just seemed to keep coming and the line of people waiting for their turn was endless. Why would any of this be different?
Veronica didn't have a lecture she knew him too well to not even try it and though the feeling of wanting to share her opinion on the way he had been behaving was still there, she kept quiet. She couldn't afford to let him in or acknowledge to fact that she still cared for him enough to not want him to throw away his life. Veronica couldn't afford letting herself get too close to Logan, knowing that it would hurt the only person she loved so she did the only thing she could do and that was keep him at a distance.
"Just let me help you.." She said softly while walking over to him slowly.
Logan could only keep his head down low as a million and one things rushed through his head. It wasn't the fact that Veronica had not tried to argue with him but the fact that she could still look at him and not be put off by his current alcohol level. He had known she would of expected this out of him but to not try and be the hero of the century took him off guard. As Logan felt her arm wrap around his, he could only wonder when everything had changed and if this could somehow be reversed to the way things were. If Veronica had dated someone other than her best friend it would of been easy for him to get him back but now that she was with Duncan, He had tried to force out all the feelings he had for her.
"Why are you doing this Veronica?" He barely got it out before they had made it to the door.
Veronica quickly assumed it was drunk chatter before eventually meeting with the thing they desperately wanted the most. The bed. She was helping him out as a favor she would expect someone else to do the same for her though the last party she attended to she was drugged then sent to the bedroom to loose her virginity to her current boyfriend, who thought she was his sister and that whole ordeal was just messed up. She felt his arm wrap around her neck as they made it all the way to his bed without making hardly any noise.
"There you go," She whispered as she lowered him onto the bed. Logan had kept his eyes on her the entire time and as he placed his own legs upward he didn't exactly want to let go of her. Veronica, however, pushed away his arms as she reached for his feet and after untying both of his shoes before throwing them across the room she heard something she hadn't heard in a long while. The tears had run down his face gently as the sensation of both warmth and sorrow came over him. He knew that the two of them could not be together but the way she was caring for him now made it that much harder to push her away. He wanted all of her even if it was against his own principals but the little bit she was giving him now only made it that much more worse for him.
"Logan?" Veronica was puzzled by his emotion though it was intoxicated Logan crying it was still a reflection of Logan. She placed her hand on his shoulder as he let out his frustrations. It hurt her to see him like this and to not actually know how to help him seemed to only make her worry. Veronica had known how far his wounds actually went and what those wounds usually lead to. A destructive Logan was not a Logan she enjoyed seeing as it became an empty shell of the man he used to be. "What's wrong?"
Her question was simple, a common question that is answered almost everyday yet as Logan felt himself slipping away at her every touch he had no answer. There was of course a sarcastic response he could of cooked up but the silence between the two seemed to only dramatize things even more. Her face was no longer soft but lines of worry came crease around her eyes, he could see this as clear as day and though the feelings were mutual the obvious answer with their circumstances was to not act on them. To Logan anything obvious was to be discarded and if living in a cage brought forth the pain he felt now it was pain he could no longer feel. His breathing became heavy as he pulled himself up closer to her.
"-Don't." He demanded as he slowly put his hand behind her, closing his eyes he before feeling her soft lips brush up against his. In that moment time had stopped, a million butterflies were burled in his stomach and for the first time in a long while he had felt alive again. Veronica had not pulled back as her own emotions came from below the surface, she knew exactly what she was getting into but there was a moment she could no longer dismiss. A moment that had lingered between the two of them waiting for it's time to come and no matter what baggage they carried with them it all wouldn't matter anymore.
Anymore in that moment but once it was over their baggage would again weigh on them and as they pulled away the happiness they had felt was only short lived.
His eyes were still moist as his hand quickly pulled off the back of her head. No matter how long your bliss actually last in reality it's never as long as one could hope for. The worry lines quickly became matching tears to go along with Logans, Veronica's own suppressed feelings had only showed her a side of herself she was quickly afraid of. She could see Duncan in her head shattered by what had just happened and knowing that would it hurt him more than she could possibly understand struck into her gut.
"Logan, I-I can't." Veronica belted out before pulling herself up. "You can't just-" She paused as words seemed impossible to come by, the walls she had built before had crumbled beyond repair and now she was completely exposed to him. "-You can't make me do this."
The words came out slowly but had a strong force to them. He could only hold his head down as he did so before and the things he had desperately wanted to say to her had never been told. "I-I just-" He tried to explain but fell short of any excuses that held no meaning before the actual truth eventually leaked out. "I didn't force you to, you know? V, I can't exactly let this go, I-I can't let you go no matter how much I want to."
Veronica's eyes had swollen as he had not made this any easier on her. She stood herself up quickly as she turned herself around and practically bolted for the door. It was hard facing the truth that seemed linger in the two of them and especially hard to leave a love like theirs behind that had so much potential but never got live up to that potential. "Logan, I won't do this to Duncan. I-I can't."
"Go on Leave when things start to get rough, it's what you do best Veronica." Logan shouted as she didn't slow herself down. He could still see her face in his head as he let himself fall back onto the bed. Though his tears were fell down his cheek, he could only image the pain and anger he had given her. They had both wanted the same thing but could not have it and now she had all of this to go through. It was irony at it's best and this time Logan couldn't crack a joke to make the damage slowly go away.
She could feel her throat scratching with every breath as her face began to get warm. Veronica couldn't stop walking as she no longer trusted herself around Logan but it was a never ending battle that tore at her well-being everyday. Eventually she found herself tumbling down as she got closer to Duncan's door. Veronica couldn't hold herself back as everything she had avoided for so long had finally caught up with her. She cried openly without any more strength to stop her, she held herself tightly and she knew that she was starting to loose herself entirely. It was then the creaking of the door along with a familiar voice of another boy she loved came out of no where.
"Veronica, What are you still doing up?" Duncan had heard the sounds of someone outside his door and as Veronica had gone missing he was quick on his feet to find her.
