I live in Portland, Oregon and take a 30-40 minute transit ride to work each day on our fine light-rail system. This story will be familiar to those of you who bravely commute in a similar way

Brilliant. It reminds me so much of my daily commute into London in the 1980s. Even back then, there was no room to knit without damaging someone. I fear I'd have skewered both young man and chatty woman.
This has to be the opening page of a novel. The title is in the final line.
Hopefully, you had a few good memorys from those daily commutes. I wouldn't call them 'good'. They consist mainly of running down (and up) spiral staircases from one platform to another, hoping not to miss the next connection (there were 3 changes)
I might try for a short story or two. I think this one would be perfect for a short story.
That would be a great short story, or it could be turned into a novel. As far as I know, "It ain't easy being green" has never been used for a book title!
Actually, I was thinking that it would make an interesting comic strip. Something along the line of For Better or Worse.
I'll put it on the slush pile of stories to come.
Your Dr Who fic inspired me. I'd had a crossover in mind for a while, and your story was the final push that made me give in, and work on fanfic again. It is nice writing something where you don't have to totally create the universe.

Yeah, but -- I inspired someone to write fanfiction instead of original fiction? Should I be proud, or ashamed? :-)
On the one hand, I have fun creating my own universe; on the other hand, I love going back into the lives of the characters we know and love so much, and I really love crossovers. RL might have me slowing down some, but there's more fanfic in my future, too.

With me the pressure is off when I'm writing fanfic; I know I want to entertain the reader and do a good job, but I don't have to worry about selling it to an editor. That makes it a lot more fun!

This did seem the epitome of the commuter's existence. I'm not sure I could get a novel out of it though. I might try for a short story or two.

Writing fanfic is kind of theraputic. At least, I'm still writing but I don't have to juggle quite so many items at once.
