life is weird

so i interviewed at a law office in the middle of May for a position as a paralegal/legal assistant at a law firm in pasadena.  they were looking for someone who spoke mandarin tho, so even though the interview went well i wasn't counting on getting the job.  plus the guy said he'd get back to me by the first week of june.  yesterday, after i finished writing my final paper for the poli sci class i'm taking at pcc, i receive a letter in the mail from UCLA (i had interviewed for a position there a few weeks ago--read previous journal) saying that i was not chosen for the position.  which kind of threw me for a loop, cuz that interview went REALLY well (although i wasnt going to take it anyway... i mean, what with gas prices there's no way i could afford to drive out to UCLA every morning).  the job, although titled administrative assistant, was basically a boring data entry job and the manager knew it.  so i'm telling myself that i didn't get it cuz he knew i'd probably quit from boredom in a month cuz i'm too dynamic a person. that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

okay, so back to the law office thing. i'd pretty much ruled it out as an option. and as of last week i have decided to look for part time positions that would allow me to take the time to visit grad schools in the fall--applied for a position as a librarian, taking the CBEST saturday so i can substitute teach a few days a week, maybe getting an observer job with LAUSD--that kind of thing.  well, to my surprise i get a call this afternoon from lawyer man saying "sorry this is such short notice, but could you come in tomorrow for a second interview/training type deal?"  so basically he has his final candidates coming in to see what kind of work they would be doing (and we would be compensated for it, of course) and then he's making his final decision from there.  and of course this would happen right after i decide to look for part time stuff. go figure. well, i'll take the job if it's offered ONLY if he's going to let me have time off for ange's wedding. cuz thats more important than a stupid job.

oh, and another thing.  he emailed me after setting up the second interview thing tomorrow saying that the salary was 30K a year (less than i was making at starbucks... balls. but better hours) and that hourly it broke down to $15.62 an hour.  a i doing the math wrong, or should i just assume that the office is closed for a few weeks a year? 30K, divided by 52 weeks, at 40 hours a week (9-6 mon-fri) comes out to 14.50 or so. soooo.... what does that mean??

interesting tho, cuz i received an email from the city of pasadena two days ago about taking a test for them to qualify for the library job.  and its an hour long.  i mean, what the heck are they going to ask me to do, "put these in alphabetical order"? um, yeah. whatever.  i'd love to work in a library tho--that'd be really fun. i'd get to talk to people AND be around books all day. i'm a nerd, i know.  only 2 downsides to that:
1) it's a government job, which means drug testing.  although i am not as fully implanted in counter culture as i once was, i still don't like being told what i can and can't do in my free time based on principle. balls to you America, and 2) that would mean i'd once again be working weekends. and i LOVE spending time with my friends on the weekends.  but the hours would not be nearly as bad as they were with starbucks, so i'm sure i can deal.

well, i'll figure it out i'm sure. i'm having a little trouble keeping my anxiety at bay, but as long as i have my friends around to keep me together, i'll be fine.
