Ed and Hank

We're only dancin' on this earth for a short while...

Note:Time-wise this happened BEFORE the last post. (Hank just didn't have time to get to it in a timely manner.) But readin'-wise it doesn't matter.

Disclaimer: Hank told their story to Annie Proulx. Jack and Ennis are all hers. Ed and Hank belong only to each other. Rating: G ( Read more... )

Hey Joe, Thanks for the definition of laurels! (Although Ed says he prefers his.)

I can't believe you had to drive two hours to see MILK. Although Hank and I still can't believe it was playing in our ultra-right-wing little town.

I'm sure you made that x-ray tech think about something she never thought about before. And that's a real good thing.

We wanted to watch the California Supreme Court hear the case on overturning Prop 8 last Thursday but we've been having terrible computer problems and hasn't been able to get online very easily or for very long. Aargh. We're sure hoping to see that over-turned though. That would be so encouraging and so great!

And thanks for the email address! We missed something last weekend because we found out about it too late to be able to go.

These guys are great and they have so much to say about gay rights! Although they are preaching to the choir, here. My friend, that I have known for over forty years, came out in the Sixties (when it was barely legal) and has lived his life "out". I found out recently that I was the first straight person that he came out to - I feel flattered although I didn't really understand at the time. I remember thinking "Oh, well - he's still just my friend". If I think back over the years, Ive known lots of gay people but never really thought about that part - just whether or not I liked them as people.
I thought the seniors discount part was cute - I had a hard time with that, too, Hank!
Thank you for this!

I have to add that I come from Canada, where gay marriage is allowed and even though I live in a small red-neck town, religion isn't big so people are pretty tolerent. Organized religion should be ashamed of the crazies that somehow speak for them. Sorry - just my rant!

Glad you enjoyed the post! I'm also glad your red-neck town is more tolerant than this one. The people here really seem to think that awful things will happen if gay people are allowed to marry (each other, that is). Although I like to think if it ever does happen in this state even this town might get more tolerant once they see that their world hasn't fallen apart because of it. And no apologies are ever necessary for ranting. (Btw, that's a VERY short rant by Hank's standards.)

I simply adore Sam Cooke. He has always been one of
my very favorite singers. I guess that gives my age away.
It was one of the first songs I ever played on a juke box.
I am glad they like him too. I love them, and am so glad
they always are at the forfront of the gay rights front.
They are wonderful to be out and proud, even if Ed is a
bit reluctant to be very known around. It is still terrific.
I loved them discussing the movie, and talking about the
way it was back then. I too remember that day very well.
I lived in California at the time. I was in LA. but just
the same it was very traumatic, and scary. So sad. Thanks
for bringing this to the forfront for all of us..jan

Apologies for taking so long to respond - Hank and I have been having computer problems. So glad you liked the post and that is all so nice of you to say. And it was such a very sad day and we remember it well too. I just hope Ed and Hank and I will still be around to see the great day when gay folks across this entire country will finally have all the same rights as everybody else does.

I am so glad for Ed and Hank to get out a little together.
I can't say how I would act in their place.
I don't remember about that occurrence sins I arrived to the states in the early sixties my English was none existing.
He must have been a very brave man, and it is sad that after all these years we can send men in outer space, walk on the moon yet we are still so backwards in our ideas about feelings for other human beings, even animals act more caring for one another than our species.
The senor discount was a soar point with me too, I would not permit my hubby to get discount tickets for me up to the time of, well that would be telling. He was not pleased to have to pay extra, but a girl has her pride.
Thanks for a very informative and loving chapter.
Take good care of each other.
Hope you visit again soon.
Love,
Torry

Thanks Torry. Sorry it took so long to respond to your comment... Hank and I have been having computer problems. Hank was very pleased that Ed decided to take him to that movie, even though it was a sad one. Hank certainly never expected it. (And is even willing to overlook the fact that Ed insisted on asking for that discount.) And yeah, Harvey Milk was definitely a very brave man.
