I'm very happy with the election. I was very disappointed in California but it shows us we have more work to do to spread the knowledge that being a homosexual is not a bad thing. I know that the latino's and african americans are still a little behind in accepting homosexuals so I think it hurt us that we got them all to vote but I'm also proud they did vote. Hell I did not think I would ever see an african american win presidency. I'm only 44 but in 1970 in my small town in central PA we did not have any African American's until a family moved into town the father was a doctor at the local hospital and we needed doctors in our small town but people were so cruel and against him and his family. They moved in right down the block from my house and people started shunning my father and mother because they welcomed them into the neighborhood and my father a school administrator was quite upset over how their children were being treated in school to the point that one late night a cross was burnt in our front yard and theirs. My mother took me and my sister to North Carolina to my grandmothers for 2 months she was so upset but we came back and well it all worked out in the end. Perry turned into one of my school friends all the way through High school and he and his wife are one of the only people from my high school class to stay in contact and visit me and my partner. I have no use for 98 percent of the people I went to school with they are so backwards. Luckily in PA we have Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Erie the three largest parts of the state in popluation that are deomocratic. The middle of the state was all red though when you look at the election results and that is where I grew up. My point is after seeing how I had to see people treat my friend and his parents I truly never thought the world would change enough to make them accept this. But 38 years later the world is different and for the better. Maybe, it will take 38 years more before we have a gay president but I'm not holding my breath. WE have to look at the positives we have claimed and in the past 26 years I have been really involved in following the gay movement. I have to say it is better for the most part even though we have work to do. It still makes me shake my head why anyone would condem a person for loving another human being. But, what can I say. I want to bask in the moment of victory and I want to try and look for all the positives in this election and pray for a quick recovery to everything bad in this world. Joe

Wow. That's so terrible that a cross was burnt in your yard and your neighbors. I don't blame your mother for sending you away for a couple of months. I'm sure glad it all worked out in the end. We were very disappointed in California too. It is ironic that in California the black folks who helped elect Obama voted 70% for prop 8 to 30% against, but like you I am still very glad that they were out voting and that Obama got elected. I did read that at the last minute the "yes on prop 8" folks were sending black voters information about Obama saying he believed marriage was "just between a man and a woman" while, of course, leaving out that Obama was in fact against proposition 8. I get awfully tired of all the semantics involved. Of course I'm not happy with Obama's choice of words, but at least he is strongly in favor of civil unions, does support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and was definitely against Proposition 8. Maybe enough people just didn't know that, or maybe it still wouldn't have made a difference. I don't know, but it all still makes us shake our heads in dismay too, although we're also with you in wanting to enjoy the victory we did get and look for the positives and hope for many more positives in the near future. (Like perhaps the California Supreme Court overturning Proposition 8 "as a violation of fundamental rights in the California Constitution". Which it so is!
