His Heart [1/2]

TITLE: His Heart
PARING: HaeHyuk
SUMMARY: Lee Donghae was in need of a heart.

---

Like most campus crushes, Lee Donghae had the looks, the brains, the talents, and the money. He had a smile certified to make practically everyone weak in the knees and no one was ever able to say no to him. He was a varsity player for the school's basketball team and was a valuable, but currently inactive, member of the soccer team.

Like most campus crushes, Lee Donghae had numerous girls (and boys) competing with each other to give their hearts to him.

But it was not in the way he would have wanted.

Because unlike most 18-year-old campus crushes, Lee Donghae was in literal need of a heart.

----

He was diagnosed when he was 16 and had been complaining of infrequent chest pains for a week. His parents had immediately referred him to one of Korea's leading doctors.

All of the complex medical terms flew over the teenager's head. All he remembered of the hour-long conversation was that he was expected to take it easy, to not exert too much effort, avoid extreme stressors and that if he wanted to have a normal life, he needed a healthy heart as soon as possible.

Despite of the fact that their family was affluent, there was little that could be done and two years later, Donghae was still in the waiting list for a heart.

---
Lee Donghae was currently sitting on a plane to Jejudo, eyes closed behind dark sunglasses and earphones plugged to his ears, hoping that whoever his seat mate was, the person wasn't a talker. He was determined to be blind and deaf to the world until they landed. As a student, he wasn't even supposed to be on a plane, he was supposed to be in school but because of his condition, his parents were adamant in giving him as much rest as possible.

So despite his reluctance to leave school on the week before his exams, he had been forced to go on an impromptu vacation alone.

His musings were interrupted when someone tapped him on the shoulder. Hoping to dissuade whoever that was by pretending to be asleep, he did not show any reaction. This only resulted to him being tapped harder, accompanied by the clearing of a throat.

Sighing inwardly, Donghae removed his earphones and his sunglasses and peered into the face of a middle-aged man smiling kindly at him.

"Young man, your bag is on my seat."

Smiling sheepishly, Donghae removed his bag and apologized, "I'm sorry. I didn't realize I left it there."

The man nodded. "That's okay, son." The man looked at him before smiling again. "You seem to be not the type to be going on vacation alone."

"It was my parent's idea, sir. They wanted me to have a break from city life."

The man nodded understandingly, extending a hand as he did so. "My name is Park Samdong." As soon as Donghae shook his hand and introduced himself, Samdong continued, "You must have been partying too hard then, Donghae-ssi."

Donghae laughed, it was clear that he wasn't going to sleep at all in this flight. It was apparent that Park Samdong was a talker. "No, not really, sir. I don't actually go to parties."

"Really now."

Donghae raised a hand. "I swear I'm telling the truth. Actually, I have this heart condition and my parents think that I shouldn't stress myself out because of school, so...here I am."

Park Samdong looked at him intensely before patting his shoulder. "Tough life you have there, son."

The young man smiled bitterly and shrugged. He usually didn't share personal information to strangers but he figured, what the hell.  "I need a healthy heart to live a normal life, too. It's been two years and there hasn't been a match...It seems like there isn't any hope left."

But Park Samdong shook his head, the smile on his face comforting. "Don't be too sure, Donghae-ssi. You never know, after all you may find your heart in Jejudo."

----

He was just accepting the key to his hotel room from the pretty receptionist when a thin man, obviously very drunk, bumped into him.

With the quick reflexes he could attribute to being a basketball and soccer player, he was able to hold the man up before he could hit the floor.

The drunk man looked up at him and smiled a wide, goofy smile. When he spoke, his voice was slurred and his words stuck together.  "You want to know something?"

Blinking and trying his best to hold the man up, Donghae ignored the scandalized look from the receptionist and nodded politely to the man. "Um, what is it?"

"Kim Junsu is such an a-arrogant...prick."

After shooting him a last smile showing more gums than teeth, the man fainted, his head flopping onto Donghae's shoulder.
