mighty friends and a game of turn or dare
“What.”
You heard me. Boa’s having a party at her place, so we have to go.”
Donghae looked dismayed. “But I can’t go. I have to work on a science project after school.” He shifted the huge stack of books to his right arm. “I’m sorry hyung, you’ll have to go on your own.”
Kangin frowned and crossed his arms. “Can’t you blow him off? Who’s your partner anyway? It’s that Lee Hyukjae kid, isn’t it? You can just get him to do it-I’ll make sure he wouldn’t tell on you.” The older man actually started cracking his knuckles, a menacing expression on his face.
“Hyukjae wouldn’t tell on me,” Donghae defended. “And can’t you ask Yunho hyung or Siwon to go with you? I really have to finish this project. It’s not fair on Hyukjae.”
“Whatever. I’ll pick you up at five sharp. Don’t be late.” Kangin was already walking off as he said the words.
Donghae gave a huff and turned away, furious with his friend. A part of him wanted to blow Kangin off, but he could also visualize exactly how Kangin will react if he drove to his house at 5PM and Donghae wasn’t there. And Donghae didn’t really fancy ending up sporting any bruises. Even Kangin’s ‘playful’ punches had been known to bruise.
But he didn’t want to have to leave all the work to Hyukjae as well-because he knew that his partner would definitely finish both their work without complaint. Hyukjae was really too kind for his own good. Knowing him, he would send Donghae off to the party and stay back to finish the project himself. They had been working on the project for nearly two months and he and Donghae had become good friends.
In fact, Donghae actually kinda had a crush on him.
Thankfully, no one-least of all Hyukjae-knew.
The brunette made it to his Physics class just in time. Hyukjae was already there, setting up their project, a contraption that had been pieced together by pieces obtained out of the garbage but according to the laws of Physics, was supposed to work. He set his books on the table and sat down next to Hyukjae. “Hey, how is it?”
Hyukjae pushed his glasses up his nose and furrowed his brow. “I tried the pulley system. Out of ten times, it worked five times and failed five times. I’m not sure if we should scrap it.” His partner leaned forward to inspect the pulley again, and Donghae couldn’t help but stare at him, noting that Hyukjae looked kinda adorable in spectacles and what a shame it was that Hyukjae didn’t wear them every day.
He didn’t know when he’d fallen for Hyukjae-it just kinda hit him one day, when he was sitting there staring at him as he tried to fix a part that Donghae had botched. All he knew what that he’d finally managed to put a name to the funny, fluttering feeling in his stomach-and had also finally figured out why he spent so much time studying Hyukjae’s gorgeous jaw line, his kissable, plump, pink lips, the soft, shiny head of blonde hair, and the way those slender fingers worked at their Rube Goldberg machine-
“Donghae,” Hyukjae said nervously when he’d realized Donghae was staring at him. The brunette’s gaze was actually getting kinda intense. “Will you please stop staring at me?”
The brunette smiled unabashedly and dropped his gaze, earning a sigh of relief from the blonde. He’d been caught more times than he can count, but it never fazed him.
“Embarrassment” just wasn’t in his dictionary.
It wasn’t until class was ending though, did he remember to break the news to Hyukjae.
“Hey, Hyukjae,” he said as the students around them started to pack up. “I can’t make it later-Kangin forced me to go some party with him at Boa’s. Can we reschedule?”
Hyukjae glanced up at him. “I’m not free for the rest of the week, Donghae. Can’t you blow Kangin off? We really need to finish this.”
“Oh,” Donghae’s shoulders slumped.
His partner smiled. “I’m just joking, you idiot. Go ahead. I know what Kangin’s like. I’ll finish this up by myself, don’t worry.”
Donghae looked at him. “But that’s not fair,” he said, his voice unconsciously taking on a whiny tone.
“No it’s not,” Hyukjae agreed. “But the point is, I don’t care.” He gave Donghae a reassuring smile. “Seriously, just go.”
Donghae sighed and stood up. “Thanks Hyukjae, I owe you one.”
The brunette hurried out of the room, feeling more than a little guilty.
“I hate this game,” Donghae groused as Kangin squeezed himself next to him.
“So do I,” Kangin said.
“Rubbish. You know you love it, really. I know you suggested it to Boa.”
“Donghae.”
“Fine, fine, you didn’t suggest it to Boa and you hate this game.”
“I do.”
Donghae sighed as Boa started the truth or dare game with an empty glass bottle. He and his friends were feeling a little tipsy now, since someone (presumably Changmin or Kyuhyun) had spiked the punch with alcohol. Donghae propped his chin on his knees and tried to look alive.
His thoughts wandered back to Hyukjae. Had he already finished the project? He knew Hyukjae sometimes got a little too into his work and often lost track of time. If it hadn’t been for Donghae being around to keep track of the time the last time they had met to work on their project, Hyukjae would have been locked inside the school and probably wouldn’t even have noticed.
He barely noticed as his friends were one by one forced to perform ridiculous dares-Heechul’s pole dancing did garner his interest for a moment though-before Kangin nudged him really hard in the ribs.
“Ow!” he yelled.
Kangin rolled his eyes and indicated the glass bottle. “Donghae, did you hear what we said?”
Donghae realized everyone’s eyes were on him. “No?”
Kangin snorted and glanced at Boa to explain.
“You’re the only one that the glass bottle hasn’t picked yet,” Boa explained. “So you have to have a go now.” She smirked and raised an eyebrow at him. “Truth or Dare?”
Donghae pondered between the two, shrugged, and replied, “Dare.”
The last time he’d picked truth, Heechul had used it as a way to force a confession out of him regarding the issue of his broken cell phone.
“Excellent.” Next to Boa, Kyuhyun reached into his pocket and brought out a cell phone. “I have one for you, and it’s perfect. You can thank me later.”
The brunette blinked at him as Kyuhyun began to explain the dare.
“So, I’m going to dial a number on my phone, and you have to tell whoever is on the other line that you like him/her, okay? And you can’t tell him/her it’s a dare.” Kyuhyun added the last bit as an afterthought. “Or you’ll have to do it with another number.”
Donghae raised an eyebrow, more than a little apprehensive. “What if you call, I don’t know---your sister or something?”
“Oh don’t worry,” Kyuhyun said brightly. “It’s someone your age.” He pressed a few buttons on his phone and handed it to Donghae. “Have fun, and act in love.”
Donghae took the cell phone and pressed it to his ear. “What do I call him?”
Kyuhyun looked momentarily stumped for a moment, until Changmin piped up. “Just call him Hyukkie, Hae.”
Hyukkie? That name sounded familiar, but he couldn’t quite place it.
“Hello?” a voice said on the other end.
Donghae’s mind went blank.
What was he supposed to say.
“Um,” he said brilliantly.
“Hello?” the voice said again. “Kyu, is that you?”
Meanwhile, Kyuhyun made frantic gestures for him to say something.
“Ah no!” Donghae forced a nervous laugh. “No, it’s not Kyuhyun.” He rubbed his forehead nervously. Kyuhyun heaved a loud sigh and started writing something on a piece of paper.
“Oh, so who are you?”
Donghae was debating whether or not to tell him his real name when Kyuhyun shoved the paper under his nose. TELL HIM I’M DONGHAE.
“Tell him I’m Donghae!” he blurted without thinking and clapped a hand over his mouth.
Around him, his friends face palmed.
“Donghae?” the voice on the other end sounded surprised. “Why are you using Kyuhyun’s phone to call me?”
Donghae’s eyes flashed desperately towards Kyuhyun, who held up the piece of paper again. I have something important to tell you, and it can’t wait.
“I-I have something important to tell you, and it can’t wait,” Donghae repeated, feeling himself growing hot under the collar.
There was a pause.
“Well, what is it?”
“Hyukkie, I…well I…”Donghae stammered, staring at the words Kyuhyun had written. Hyukkie, I like you.
“Just say it,” Kangin hissed.
“Hyukkie,” he repeated.
“Just do it, you fish!” Heechul whispered.
“Hyukkie, I like you!” he blurted, as Kyuhyun dropped the paper and high-fived Changmin.
Omfg I just confessed to a stranger.
There was a pregnant pause on the other end, and Donghae waited, visibly sweating. In fact, the whole room seemed to be holding their breath waiting for the reply.
“Donghae…” the voice sounded uncertain. “Do you really mean it?”
Kyuhyun started nodding frantically, waving his hands about. That boy had been hanging around Siwon too much.
“Absolutely,” Donghae’s voice sounded weirdly croaky.
Kyuhyun let out a silent cheer, and then snatched the phone from Donghae, pressing the end call button.
“Hey!” Donghae protested. “What are you doing?”
“Excellent job, Donghae,” Changmin grinned.
Jessica took some tissues and handed it to the still flushing brunette. “You’re sweating,” she told him, wrinkling her nose a little.
“T-thanks,” Donghae stammered. He looked at Kyuhyun. “Wait. Can’t I call him back and tell him it’s a dare? What if he took me seriously?”
Kyuhyun shrugged and put his phone away.
“You’ll thank me for this.”
*
Donghae and Hyukjae didn’t have a chance to talk much the next day during Physics. The teacher was hanging around giving advice, and they couldn’t exactly hold a conversation in front of her, which made Donghae more than a little uptight, because he really wanted to talk to Hyukjae.
He settled for being icily polite towards the teacher instead.
Towards the last ten minutes of class though, she finally went off to bother another group. Donghae heaved a sigh of relief and turned to Hyukjae, who steadfastly avoided his gaze.
“Hey, relax, she’s gone,” he told him.
“I know that.”
Donghae frowned at Hyukjae’s defensive tone. “What’s wrong?”
“N-nothing,” Hyukjae stammered. “So…how was the party yesterday?”
Sensing Hyukjae didn’t want to talk about what was wrong (because Donghae knew something was up), he said, “It was okay. We played truth or dare, and I received the weirdest dare from Kyuhyun ever.”
“Do tell.”
“He asked me to call some random number and tell the person on the other line I like him,” Donghae explained. “It was really stupid, because I couldn’t think of what to say, so Kyuhyun had to write the lines down on a piece of paper and show them to me,” he chuckled a little. “It was seriously nerve-wrecking, though. I hoped the person didn’t take me seriously…” he stopped short, seeing Hyukjae had literally frozen in his seat.
“Hyukjae?” he asked, confused, and reached out to shake the older man, but Hyukjae slapped his hand away. He looked up, his eyes finally meeting Donghae’s, and the latter was shocked to see them filled with tears.
“So it was just a dare?” he asked, his voice trembling.
“Well, yes…but Hyukjae, why are…”
Baffled, Donghae started putting the pieces together-Hyukjae’s shocked reaction, the name Kyuhyun had told him to address the stranger-and it finally clicked.
“Oh shit. No, Hyukjae-”
The blonde ignored him and started shoving things into his bag. “You asshole,” he hissed. “You don’t g-go around playing with people’s feelings like that!” A sob caught in Hyukjae’s throat, and he dragged a hand across his eyes, which were rapidly becoming redder and redder.
With a mounting sense of horror, Donghae realized who he had been talking to on the phone yesterday.
“Hyukjae,” He began desperately, just as the bell rang.
The blonde pushed away from the table and stormed out of the classroom.
Donghae cursed and ran out after him, ignoring the fact that half his belongings were still scattered across the table. In the hallway, he could make out Hyukjae hurriedly walking down the hallway, and immediately ran after him.
“Hyukjae, wait!” he yelled.
Hyukjae glanced over his shoulder, and quickened his steps. Donghae pushed past the horde of students, his eyes never leaving Hyukjae’s back. He passed by some of his teammates telling him to hurry or he would be late for soccer practice.
Donghae didn’t care. He’d to talk to Hyukjae.
He finally caught up with the blonde at the secluded corridors of the science block.
“Hyukjae, wait.”
His arm curled around the blonde’s waist, preventing him from taking another step. Hyukjae was about to turn and maybe elbow him in the face when Donghae effortlessly spun him around and pulled him in for a kiss.
It was a sweet, innocent kiss. Both of them had their lips firmly closed, though for Hyukjae it was more out of shock than anything else. Donghae could taste the salt of Hyukjae’s tears, and wrapped both arms around Hyukjae, pulling him closer to his body, hoping that Hyukjae would understand what he was trying to say and not kill him for kissing him like that-
And then Hyukjae was kissing him back, his arms going around Donghae’s neck to pull him closer, his lips pressing onto Donghae with equal force, which made Donghae smile into the kiss, barely noticing Hyukjae’s fingers moving up to tangle in his hair.
Eventually the two pulled apart, Hyukjae’s pink lips more than a little swollen, his cheeks red. Donghae ran a fingers through his own (now messy) locks and smiled. “You idiot. I told you to wait.”
Hyukjae shot him an annoyed look. “You kissed me!” he said.
Donghae raised an eyebrow, but he was still smiling. “Evidently.”
“You should have waited and asked if I liked you too,” Hyukjae said, though he didn’t really sound angry. “I mean, if I didn’t, I could have punch-or probably do something much worst.”
“I’ll take my chances,” Donghae reached out to pull the blonde towards him. “Anyway, I know it was a dare, and I have my suspicions that Cho Kyuhyun planned this deliberately-but I meant what I said anyway.” He pulled Hyukjae so close their noses were almost touching. “I really, really do like you.”
Hyukjae narrowed his eyes, though Donghae could see his cheeks turning pinker. “You’d better mean it this time.”
“Oh, I do,” Donghae gave a nervous cough. “I actually liked you for quite awhile now.”
The blonde’s smile slide off his face. “Really?” he sounded a little surprised. “Okay, so that explains why you keep staring at me.”
“Yah! You know you like it!”
“Not at that time. But now I know why, I don’t think I’ll mind so much.” Hyukjae smiled. He leaned forward and tentatively kissed the brunette on the lips. “I really, really like you too, Hae.”
“Hae?”
Hyukjae smirked slightly. “Well, you called me Hyukkie first, remember.”
“That was Kyuhyun. And speaking off Kyuhyun, do we kill him together, or do we thank him?”
“To be honest, I think we’d better thank him. Because knowing you and me, I would probably have been middle-aged and pretty unattractive by the time you told me you like me.”

a/n: ehehehehe inspired by a friend who received a call like Hyukjae did. Sadly, he didn't know who the caller was or got together with him eventually, LOL.
