Ok that's quite enough researching of Aberdeen.

Funnily enough I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet & finance a recce in preparation for September.

Quite how I'm going to manage this, god only knows. I was unaware that I would not be able to cash in a private pension plan. This was my great hope for a short term cash injection & it's apparently illegal. Bugger.

So now I have to find enough to:

Visit Aberdeen to look at jobs / housing - emphasis on jobs.
Assuming I'm flying, as a 7.5 hour train journey would not be good prior to a job interview & wouldn't leave enough daylight to do house hunting. Likely 2 return trips @ £150 a time:
£300

Learn to drive: Chance of job without a car = slim to none.
30-35 hours @ £20ph plus licence £50 & test £60.
£700-800

Save up enough for a deposit on a flat / bedsit plus agency fees
Aberdeen is fucking expensive to rent. Let's hope I can find a job first, then housing will have to follow. Without a car I can't live further out to save money, so will have to live near work.
Looks like £500pcm rent, so inc. agency fees I'd estimate:
£800

Moving costs.
Assuming I'm going up by train with basic luggage & selling most of my stuff to avoid moving it:
£100

So £2000 is a fair estimate - with about 10 months to do this in at a rate of £200pcm saving.

This can be done, it just involves living on Crunchy Nut cornflakes for longer than I'd care to think.

My main hope is the prospect of a promotion. Technically I know I can hack it, but the pressure at work is starting to tell & I'm getting frayed at he edges. My recent review basically boiled down to "Can do his current job & do it well. A lot of the time working up to the standard of those on the role above. However his attitude is a problem".

That's the kicker - I'm working in a high pressure job with a bunch of idiots & I'm finding it harder & harder to bit my tongue, while everything around me keeps hitting the fan due to their incompetence or laziness.

On a more positive note, I have the first MCP exam (70-270 for those who know / care) lined up for early December. If this goes to plan, the time off I have at XMas should stand me in good stead to revise for the next in line (70-290) to take at end of Jan. This should hopefully give me something useful to bring to the table when it's time to find a new Job at end of Jan or push for a promotion.

If (it's a big if) I can get 4 exams finished before the move & earn an MCSA then I should have a chance to get a job paying enough to live. That is assuming of course that the recession leaves enough companies recruiting...
