Vancouver 2012: Summer Night Market at Richmond

Aug 04, 2012 15:14

In all our previous trips to Vancouver, we didn't get the chance to visit the Summer Night Market, which as the name suggests is only open during Summer. Hence, Stvn was eager to check it out and our generous hosts kindly agreed to fulfill our request :)

Richmond is truly the new Chinatown as the population is made up of 60 percent Asian-Canadian. Consequently, you can bet on your last dollar that the best Chinese restaurants or dim sum places can be found here. We went to one of the top restaurants - Kirin Restaurant - for dinner before going to the market. Oh my, what a treat it was. Yes, it was pricey but the quality of the food was outstanding. Happy tummy!

We learned from our friends that there are actually two night markets during summer and the other one is called Richmond Night Market. The good thing that came out of this differentiation is that the crowd was more manageable. Even then it was still very crowded especially at the food stalls! Yup, the largest crowd was at the food areas. Why are we not surprise?

Besides food, there are many great offerings ranging from electronic doodads, Asian-language CDs and DVDs, different variety of knick-knacks, cheap clothes and even cars! My dear hubby was delighted to score an AKB48's DVD at 10 bucks! I couldn't resist and ended up getting six pairs of socks for $10.

It was a wonderful way to spend the evening. We had much fun trying out different food and seeing the delight on my friend's face as she enjoyed her childhood favourites was priceless! Oh, the twister potatoes were super addictive! You have been warned!

The night market bears much resemblance to our own pasar malam albeit it is much much bigger! It was definitely a fun experience and glad that we had the chance to visit it.
