Hi Enigma,

First, let me say that for all of my griping, I do adore NYC. As far as the US goes, I have not been to another big city that comes close. I've been to Miami, Dallas, LA, Boston(love Boston, it's just smaller) Chicago. I've never been to San Franciso though. But NYC is big and buzzing with life life life. And it's not all spread out, like LA and Dallas. It's all in one big place. Does that make sense? That's why I like Boston too. And both have great brownstone neighborhoods. Not that I know anyone who actually afford a brownstone, but the neighborhoods are cool.
I love London and am dying to go to Paris.
Now, I think you will be okay taking the mass transit from LaGuardia to the city. That shold work out okay. I'm guessing the hostel will be pretty small room, and the upper East Side is more rundown-ish the the Upper West Side, which is great.
I don't know much about Brooklyn, sorry to say. But I think there are some great old apartment buildings there. I think my friend's grandparents lived in one-pretty sure we were in Brooklyn! The apartment was huge-and it had character, which they don't build into apartments anymore. There are a few cool towns in Jersey too. Like Maplewood and Montclair. Both have good train service.
Commuting is expensive around here though.
