It's almost over. Radio Production. I cannot believe this school had the balls to charge 1300 plus a lab fee for this worthless course. Typical evening of class: (supposed to run from 6pm-940pm)
arrive at 6. wait for the others. there are what, 6 of us? me, kelli, rob, abdul, darnell, alfred, shannon, yup, 6. and the, ahem, professor, who is nice, a big kid, great sense of humor, but hey, I got a big kid with a great sense of humor at home, for free, and he gives me money sometimes.
So, this is what we do. we go into the radio studio. (i am paying no attention to capital letters today) The radio studio has a computer, a sound board which is hooked up to the thing that plays the CDs, tapes or mini-disks, whatever you have. The fun thing? It ain't hooked up to anything else. Ha Ha the joke's on us...there IS no radio station, it's all make believe, but the speakers work so you can at least jam to the tunes and like dat bro.
Every week the guy cuts the class to 830 the latest. Already I could complain and get my money back, but I want the credits and outta there. I'm too old to waste yet another class, since last year that was my own choice.
We each take about 10 minutes and have to play songs of our own choosing, get made fun of by the BigKid Professor, who amuses himself at our expense. I have to admit he's pretty funny. But again, that is not what I do this for.
So each person practices for less than 10 minutes switching back and forth between the microphone and speaking and playing songs. We have no real copy to read-just make up stuff. No one talks for more than say, 20 seconds, I mean, you're talking to NOTHING.
We have 3 classes left. Tomorrow night, when the whole campus has left for break, we are going to be handed mikes and mini-disk recorders and be told to go on the campus and interview people. Like who? And we are just supposed to make something up to say. I am going to ask everyone what they are doing for the holiday. Or maybe I will ask them what they thought of what the white man did to the Native People. The only people around will be the ones in Tuesday night classes. Not to mention that there are only 2500 people in this school to begin with, and the lions share of them go in the DAYTIME. Duh. This is his big attempt at teaching 'interviewing'. I told him last week that we could have accomplished a lot more in this class. He said Yeah, we got sidetracked. ?????
Oh yeah, we are supposed to go in the daytime to 'practice' when someone can let us into the studio. I wsa like, hello, I work fulltime, not going to happen, and really, how boring is it to switch back and forth betwqeen mike and song? he hasn't shown us any techniques. like maybe uisng props to make different noises and at least we could do the news, but noooooo. I told him all of this too.
So, in three weeks I have to hand in a 1/2 hour radio show. tomorrow I have to give him my 'outline' of what it will be.
My outline: intro and a some school talk, music, news, mandatory interview, music, and goodbye.
