I had a theory... or rather have a theory... on why there is such an outright opposition to legalizing gay marriage, and it's a quite simplistic one if one were to simply look at our government and society and the motivations behind some of the institutions placed before us to restrict both our lives and choices:

I've always thought that the entire base motivation lay simply in the Family Court's status as a money-making behemoth, as it's entire foundation relies on stigma and accepted "roles" to define not only the division of the family, but it's assets as well. In a society that preaches equality, but still goes out of it's not-so-subtle way to victimize females, there's been an accepted idea of who gets what, in general, which, if you remove high profile cases and rich people tossing out money to get the better cut, is generally based on these ascribed roles. The problem you run into is this: If both parties are of the same sexual biology, how can you uphold the somewhat sexist idealism that has become integrated into the system. If both parties are male or both female, then division will have to scrutinized more closely and, God forbid, more fairly... and, if the structure has to be adapted for those of that orientation, then, naturally, the same would follow suit for others.

I don't think that's something they want.

What do you think?
