Sehun was standing in front of the big window inside of the Seoul animal shelter located close to Hongdae. His ears were flattened to his head as he watched how grey clouds were blocking his view from the sun. A flash of lightning announced the shortly following thunder and little raindrops were coloring the outside world grey.
The weather felt like an inner reflection of Sehun’s soul. It’s been exactly nine months, twenty eight days and five hours since he had been brought here.
Pressing his slim fingers against the thin glass he leaned his forehead against the cold surface.
Sehun sometimes wondered why he was born so differently from other cathybrids. Instead of big round eyes, a tiny body and an all over cute appearance, he was tall with a muscular build. His silver hair and small brown eyes weren’t fooling anyone who was looking for a cute bundle of joy to dominate.
All his siblings had been adopted by a kind owner shortly after they came of age, only Sehun was abandoned in a shelter after no one showed interest in the courteous boy.
His silver ears were twitching as someone was gently poking his side.
“I-I’ll give you a cookie, so don’t look so sad anymore.” a small voice addressed him and Sehun smiled at Chen, a new arrival to the shelter, who held out a chocolate chip cookie with his small hands.
The ends of Chen’s mouth were curled up in a shy smile, brown tail elegantly swinging in the air behind him.
“Thank you, Chen. Did you bake them yourself?” Sehun took the cookie and bit into it. The baked treat was still hot resulting in the chocolate chips to melt in Sehun’s mouth like honey.
“Yes, the daughter of the shelter owner taught me how.” the little cat squeaked joyfully and Sehun thought that it wouldn’t be long until Chen would find a new home. The smaller was sheer adorable.
Chen and Sehun were both sitting behind the window, eating cookies as they watched the small rain drops sliding down the glass. A few couples under umbrellas were giggling and using the bad weather to cling onto each other tightly. Chen had pressed his nose against the glass trying to catch a glimpse of a cute couple kissing.
“Do you think we ever find someone like that?” a hint of sadness lingered in Chen’s voice so Sehun reached out to fondle behind his brown ears.
“I’m sure we will.” ...you will at least. Sehun finished in his thoughts.
The next week passed by quickly and Sehun was growing closer to Chen. The little cat was full of energy and always stayed positive. During the night they curled up next to each other and over the day they either played some games or talked about what their dream owner would look like.
Chen was the first cat boy that was not making fun of him. Sehun had gotten used to be alone since everyone else was avoiding him due his ‘different’ appearance.
At least they had stopped throwing things at him and calling him names. He never showed it but it had hurt him deep inside. All he ever wanted was to be accepted just the way he was and for someone to love him.
That’s why Chen had become such an important friend to him.
Another week went by and the weather was slowly getting better. Spring was slowly approaching, Sehun could tell from the small buds that were spearing up everywhere. It was during a sunny morning when the small bell from the shop door announced a visitor and had Chen excitedly bolting to the entrance hall.
Curiously he peeked from behind a small corner with Sehun and eyed a man dressed in a black suit talking to the woman at the information counter. The man wasn’t very tall but his handsome face made up for what he was missing in height. The lady asked him if he was looking for a special type of cat but the man gave her an endearing smile as he shook his head.
“I just want an energetic friend that keeps me company, it gets quite lonely when you work a lot.” the man explained before the doorbell sounded for the second time and another man with blond hair but completely out of breath joined the first one.
“Sorry that I’m late Junmyeon, the coffee shop was busier than I thought today. It took me almost thirty minutes to get a stupid cappuccino with extra cream on top. Why exactly did you want me to go with you in the first place?!” the second man clutched his stomach trying to sooth his unsettled breathing.
“My apology for the inconvenience but asking you to accompany me was the only chance to lure you here. Otherwise you would have never taken a step inside an animal shelter.” Junmyeon replied honestly resulting in a slap to the shoulder from his friend.
“That’s because I resend the whole catboy idea. What would I want with a fragile, constantly nagging boy when I myself is enough to deal with?!”
“Come on Luhan, I don’t ask you to adopt one but just take a look at them, ok?” Junmyeon took the brochure from the kind entrance woman and dragged a grumpy Luhan behind himself in the direction of the single rooms that were shared by two to three hybrids at a time.
Chen grabbed Sehun’s hand and together they sat down in the middle of their cozy little room,
“The first man is so good looking - I wonder if he would pick someone like me. ” Chen mumbled as he disinterestedly flipped through a magazine that he had received the other day.
Sehun was sitting next to him chin rested on the smaller’s shoulder as they both waited for the two visitors to stop at their room.
Sehun’s mind wandered off to the second man. His blond fluffy hair had outlined the pale face perfectly. Luhan, the name itself was beautiful and Sehun couldn’t deny that he had never seen a face like this before. So pale - with rosy cheeks and beautiful brown eyes. His heart was beating unusually fast as the door to their room was pushed open and they were met with a pair of two soft eyes on them.
Hesitantly Chen stood up, pretending to dust off his clothes as he shyly bowed to their visitors. With his ear flattened and red cheeks he carefully reached out to hold onto Junmyeon’s sleeve,
“Y-you are very handsome.” he stuttered and his little hands were shaking. Junmyeon was focusing on the small boy in front of him and couldn’t deny that he found him adorable. Gently he fitted two fingers under Chen’s chin and made the small cat meet his gaze.
“...and you are breathtaking.” is all Junmyeon could say as flustered hazel eyes were staring up to him. Junmyeon’s grin widened as a slight stroke over Chen’s head resulted in a small purr from the other.
Meanwhile Luhan was busy scanning Sehun up and down as if he had just seen a ghost. Sehun felt slightly intimidated under the other’s intense stare. In one swift movement he stood up and walked into the direction of the skeptical observer.
Without a word he paused as he was only a few breaths away from a wide eyed Luhan.
“Wow, you are quite tall for a cathybrid.” Luhan noted as he was forced to look up to meet Sehun’s intrigued gaze.
“I get that a lot.”
Sehun’s deep voice caused small goosebumps to spread all over Luhan’s body.
Suddenly a hand landed on his cheek and the other was leaning in even closer,
“I have never seen such a gorgeous person before. You are even more beautiful than the women who work here.” Sehun boldly confessed with a blank face which had Junmyeon throwing in a fit of laughter while Luhan seemed to be close to strangle the other.
“Are you always that straightforward or only now to make my day even more miserable?” Luhan batted the catboy’s straying fingers away and took a step away to create some space in between them.
An awkward silent spread to the room which was surprisingly broken by Chen’s shy voice,
“A-are you taking me home?” Junmyeon’s head snapped back down to the little hybrid who was nervously fiddling with the hem of his shirt and it was his heart that made the decision not his mind when he picked him up and held him close to his chest.
“Yea, I think I shall take you home little one.”
Sehun had lowered himself back onto the ground, watching how Chen was happily rubbing his head against his new owner’s chest. He felt genuinely happy for his friend especially since the man’s aura was warm and gentle. Sehun was sure he’d take good care of Chen and yet - he felt envious.
Luhan was releasing a long sigh before he told his friend that he’d wait in the entrance hall for them. Before he left the room though, he threw another unreadable gaze at Sehun as if he was pondering on something.
The door fell shut and Junmyeon told Chen to pack up his dearest belongings. Chen’s small ears twitched delightfully as he dashed and stumbled through their small room to pick up his favorite ball, blanket and stuffed animal.
Junmyeon however was crouching down in front of Sehun, carefully patting his hair,
“Despite his sharp tongue - Luhan is a very kind but loenly person. Even if he is in a room surrounded by many people - he’d still feel empty. I can’t promise you that he’ll be back to get you but I hope he will because you seem like someone who could lure him out of his little shell.”
“No one would pick me. I’m too tall and by far not as adorable and cheerful than any other hybrid in this shelter.” Sehun pressed through his teeth as he walked over to the other side of the room to help Chen pack his belongings. Junmyeon shook his head because Sehun didn’t seem to realize that instead of a sweet bundle of joy - Luhan needed someone strong and independent like j´him by his side.
A pair of small hands wrapped around Sehun’s torso from behind and a tiny smile spread over his face as he felt how Chen was nuzzling his head against his back.
“I will come and visit you, pinky promise!” the smaller then held out his pinky and Junmyeon laughed at the scene of them linking fingers in a promise.
“Make sure to listen well and not nag too much!” Sehun squeezed Chen’s cheek one last time before the other nodded and flew to Junmyeon’s side. Junmyeon enlaced their hands and took the little bag out of Chen’s hand as they walked outside the room.
The silence that followed was almost unbearable - only when the sound of raindrops drumming against the window set in - did Sehun find peace to drift off into a deep slumber.
A week past, maybe even more than that but Sehun didn’t really care. Yesterday Chen had come by to visit him - even bringing him freshly baked cupcakes which he had baked with Junmyeon the night before.
He was avoiding the other rooms since Chen had left, the other cathybrids were back on his case. Yesterday they had thrown all of his clothes into the trash can and Sehun had been forced to wear a grey overall from the shelter while his clothes were being washed.
It was unfair how the others disliked him for being tall and muscular - it’s not like he had asked to be born like this.
At least they didn’t touch his books again - it was the only time that he had ever shed a tear as his favorite novel had been thrown into the small fire place down the hallway.
Luckily one of the shelter staff had seen it and bought him a new book after scolding the other hybrid.
It was raining again.
Sehun was lazing around on the wide window bench, tail flicking from one side to the other while he was picking up a book he had started to read a while ago.
The book was about a poor man who seeked out to find the real meaning of happiness and Sehun couldn’t help but ask himself the same question.
He had probably reading about an hour when his ears perked up at steps walking down the hallways. It was only eleven in the morning - so their lunch shouldn’t be served for another hour.
When the door was pushed open - Sehun dropped the book he had been holding as Luhan’s pale face came into sight. The man was uncomfortable shifting from one leg onto the other, bottom lip trapped between his teeth as he looked up at Sehun with his deer like eyes,
“So, um, I thought about this for the past week and after barely getting any sleep at night I decided that...that”
Luhan had obviously a hard time to form a coherent sentence so Sehun rose and walked over to him. Carefully as if any physical contact could scare the other away he wrapped his tail around Luhan’s wrist,
“...you came back.” was all Sehun could say. No one had ever come back for him and that made Luhan special. Luhan eyed the handsome hybrid. Sehun’s hair was silver and his eye color was green - which wasn’t unusual for a cat hybrid but Luhan was still fascinated by it.
“Yes,” he finally pulled himself back out of his daze, “I don’t know how this is supposed to work out but I want to give it a try.” He paused and felt how Sehun’s tail was gently trailing up and down his arm,
“I will take you with me.”
The words had just left Luhan’s mouth as he found himself pressed against a firm chest and felt soft lips pressed on top of his hair.
His heart was speeding up at the contact - Sehun’s embrace felt so warm - so secure as if he had nothing to fear in this world.
“Thank you. I will do anything to stay by your side.” Sehun whispered as his tail found its way around Luhan’s waist to keep him close.
It was new to Luhan to be held like this but he couldn’t say that it was unpleasant.
Actually Sehun wasn’t what everyone had told him about little, cute and obedient cat hybrids but maybe his intense gaze, his tall, lean figure was what had made him comeback.
Because Luhan himself was looking for someone to hold him, give him strength and comfort. The moment Sehun had cupped his face one week ago - Luhan had felt it.
A tiny spark lighting up inside of him. Sehun hadn’t left his mind ever since then - no matter how many hours he worked overtime or how much he tried to distract himself from the memory of silver ears and green eyes.
When Sehun slowly withdrew from the embrace he noted a faint pink that had spread over his new owner’s face and he felt how his heart skipped a beat.
“I’ll be back with my stuff!” he beamed happily at Luhan who just bashfully scratched the back of his head and nodded.
It felt like a dream when Sehun watched the outside world passed by when he looked outside the window of Luhan’s car. They didn’t talk much during the car ride because it wasn’t necessary.
Luhan’s apartment was located close to downtown and Sehun curiously gazed around their neighbourhood. It was peaceful, with a small convenience store right down the street.
“So what do you usually eat?” Luhan asked while they were walking upstairs since the elevator seemed to be out of order.
“I eat almost everything so just cook what you usually do - it’s fine.” Sehun assured as he watched Luhan unlock the door and tailed after him inside his new home.
Luhan’s apartment was spacious, with big windows, a white carpet and furnitures in the colors red and white. It looked cozy yet a little bit too big when he thought of Luhan living here all by himself.
Said person gestured him to follow after him and Sehun was given a small apartment tour. His room was right beside Luhan’s bedroom and Sehun couldn’t find the right words how grateful and happy he felt. His own room. His own bed, wardrobe, desk and bookshelf!
“Chen told me that you like to read so I got you some novels.” Luhan spoke from where he was standing. Sehun turned around on the spot and his hug was maybe a little bit too energetic since he sent both of them tumbling to the floor.
Luhan couldn’t help but burst into laughter when Sehun rubbed their cheeks together and purred contently against him.
“Would have never imagined that some books can make one this euphoric!”
Sehun then remembered that he was probably squashing his petite owner and rolled off him - apologetically biting his bottom lip, “Sorry, it’s just that I kind of gave up hope that anyone would want me and now you are even providing me with an own room!”
Luhan’s stomach twisted at that - the sudden sadness that was reflected from Sehun’s eyes reminded him of himself, alone in his apartment during rainy nights. He brushed some silver strands out of Sehun’s forehead and hesitantly cradled him behind his furry ears.
“You are welcome.” Luhan’s smile was genuine and Sehun felt himself leaning into the soft touch.
Their first week was rather awkward since Sehun was used to be around a normal human so he simply walked around naked after he finished showering which had cost two plates and one ceramic glass their precious life as Luhan had spotted him. They still were cautious of each other when it came to skinship but they slowly grew used to each other’s company.
Luhan realized that he had been on his breaking point before he had adopted Sehun. The way how his heart was pounding fast inside his chest when the hybrid’s head rested on his lap as they watched television made it all to clear. Junmyeon had been right, he had been lonely to a point where his feelings had turned cold as ice.
Now that Sehun was around he could feel his icy shield melting though.
Junmyeon and Chen had come to visit the other day. Sehun had read one of his books to Chen who had barely been focusing on the story but more on the chocolate chip cookie he had been happily chewing on.
“So, how does it feel to have someone sleep next to you at night?!” Junmyeon suddenly asked him and Luhan raised an eyebrow at that,
“We are not sharing a bed, he has his own room.”
“...Luhan, he is a hybrid, he needs a lot of affection. Please don’t forget that.”
Junmyeon started his lecture but Luhan’s attention lied on Sehun how he was wiping countless cookie crumbles out of Chen’s face and he couldn’t help but smile.
The two hybrids were like bickering siblings but Junmyeon had to promise to visit at least once a week otherwise Chen had threatened to tear his favorite pair of boxers apart.
A whole month had passed when Luhan heard the door to his bedroom creak in the middle of the night. His bed was dipping and soon a warm body pressed up against his back - spooning him.
“Sehun?”
He could feel how the other tensed up and his ears where probably flattened to his head.
“Sorry, had a bad dream but I can leave if you want?” the hybrid whispered inaudibly.
Luhan turned around and his nose hit Sehun’s chest - the hybrid was just ridiculously tall as compared to him. It was around 2 am in the morning and Luhan didn’t feel like arguing so he just closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around the other’s torso - snuggling closer.
“No, it’s fine - you can stay.”
Sehun purred in reply, wrapping his own arms protectively around the petite male and hugged him close. The moon was shining through the thin curtains while Sehun waited for Luhan’s breathing to even. His face nuzzled into the other’s soft hair and he just didn’t want to let go anymore.
Luhan had been nothing else but good to him and yet Sehun was aware of the invisible wall that was still standing between them.
He was determined to break the wall down, step by step.
~*~
The next morning however, Luhan woke up and when he saw the peaceful sleeping face of the other he felt how panic was rising inside of him. He hadn’t even noticed how Sehun had been growing on him over the past few weeks.
Now the mere thought of the other disappearing rammed a nail inside his heart. Luhan felt dizzy, scared and confused as he stumbled out of bed and under the shower. He had sworn to never let anyone in that close no more since the day his ex-boyfriend had thrown him away like an empty box of tissues.
He needed to get away, breath in some air and distance himself from the hybrid to sort out his mind. How could he be so foolish and make the same mistake again? He was bound to get hurt again like this.
Luhan put on his suit and after placing a carton of banana milk on the table he almost fled out of his own apartment.
Sehun woke up alone in the queen size bed and the other half was already cold. He stumbled to his feet, tail restlessly swaying from one side to another as he made his way to the kitchen.
A white note was attached to his favorite banana milk and he anxiously picked it up.
>> Sehun. I’ll be gone until tomorrow because of work. - Luhan <<
His ears twitched in confusion, Luhan would usually at least eat breakfast with him before heading out for work and he couldn’t remember the other mentioning anything about extra hours or a business trip.
Luhan wouldn’t just abandon him like that, right? He sunk down on the chair, lips attached to the lid of the banana milk carton - outside little raindrops were knocking against the window.
Over the next week Sehun almost never saw Luhan around, they didn’t even watch movies anymore together in the evening and Sehun didn’t dare to climb into the other’s bed again.
He still had no idea why Luhan suddenly seemed to be avoiding him like a plague but it hurt him how tired and stressed out the other looked.
Even when he wrapped his tail around Luhan’s wrist and tried to address the topic - Luhan simply brushed it off saying about how he is having a lot to do at work.
Sehun felt uneasy and scared. He spend most of his days reading or watching television since Luhan was out the whole time. Like his mood - the weather didn’t change for any better. (
