At 5:30 today I picked up my roommate and we headed off to brave the traffic to Woodland Hills. Why did we do this craziness? In order to see my first ever advanced screening- the
3:10 to Yuma remake starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.
Non-spoilery in a nutshell: This movie kicked ass. Action. Humor. Drama. Pathos. Moral grey areas. A FUCKING GATLING GUN. There may be ways this movie could rock harder, but I have no idea what they are, and they may be beyond the comprehension of the human mind.
Tiny bit spoilery basic plot summary: Ben Wade (Crowe) is a devilishly charming, but vicious outlaw who has the inconvenient misfortune of being apprehended, due to the meddlesome ways of good guy everyman rancher Dan Evans (Bale). Wade must be escorted from Bisbee, where he was caught, to Contention where he will board the 3:10 train for Yuma to stand trial in a federal court. Evans volunteers to join the escort, needing the $200 offered for the job in order to save his ranch and family from debt. Over the course of the trip the two men develop a wary respect for each other, all the while being tracked by Wade's second-in-command Charlie Prince (Ben Foster) who'll do anything to free his boss. Extra special fandom note: Co-starring Alan Tudyk as the plucky comic relief Doc.
At the end of the screening a woman asked us lots of questions, including what the film reminded us of. I swear, people were just randomly naming westerns. I went with The Proposition, which I saw last year (
and reviewed), except 3:10 to Yuma is less... harsh.
The screening woman also asked us what we would tell our friends to get them to go see this movie. I said "gatling gun." People seemed to thing I was joking, but I was dead serious.
Case in point:
(22:59:56) morwen42: if I told you a movie had a gatling gun, would that make you interested in seeing it?
(23:00:22) LB Lunchbox LB: Yes!!!
(23:00:27) LB Lunchbox LB: Well...does it get used?
(23:00:30) morwen42: yes
(23:00:32) morwen42: to great effect
(23:00:41) LB Lunchbox LB: Then HELLZ YEAH!!!
At least I wasn't as bad as the annoying Christian Bale fangirls who clearly shop at Hot Topic. Man, they had a bad case of the dumbs. And eeeeeverything had to relate to Christian Bale and his hotness. I realize they're an important part of the target audience, but can they please just shut up? *sigh*
Finally, if you are still curious:
