Last night was absolutely amazing. I went to Displace Me, which was a huge event in 15 cities across the country and the focus was to bring awareness to the civil war going on in northern Uganda and all the people who have been forced from their homes. The war has been waging the last 21 years, but they've been living in these displacement camps the last ten.
Imagine, you are your age, and you have never known anything except fear of the rebel army (Lord's Resistance Army, LRA). Children are kidknapped every night and brain washed and made into child soldiers. This is unexceptable and it needs to end.
There was a speaker last night at the Seattle Displace Me. He was Acholi (from N. Uganda) and is the superintendent of the Gulu (I'm pretty sure this is the area w/ the most displacement camps) school district. This was his first time to the U.S. and while in Seattle he saw a guy he went to h.s. in Uganda with. This just proves it is a small world. He said thank you so many times for what Invisible Children has already done but pleaded for us to not give up the fight. This is a war that CAN and WILL be ended by the young. We are at the prime age for activism. We're not so wrapped up in our own lives that we shut out the rest of the world. He encouraged us to continue our effort. To travel to Uganda. To show our support for our brothers and sisters over there who are dieing every day.
The United States prides itself on being free, but how can we be content with that when so many people around the world are not?
The time to act is now. Every war has an end. Let's end this one.
This video is from last year's Global Night Commute (last year's version of Displace Me). There will be another video released shortly documenting Displace Me. I'll post that when it becomes availiable.
