Week 12: Dare - Recreate something from your childhood.
OOC: This is a piece set in current Season 3 so it involves future!Peter and Nathan. It's set before future!Peter took real!Peter off off and away. It's co-written with vote4nathan and mybrothershadow.

Nathan set the box cutter aside after slicing through the tape that had held the cardboard box closed. He had lost track of how much time he had spent unpacking boxes and setting up his new office. Opening the flaps of the box, a corner of his lips twitched into a ghost of a grin at the familiar picture of Peter and himself. He lifted the photo out of the box and spied beneath it the small brown leather bag. The top was tied off with leather ties and Nathan carefully lifted it out of the box. Loosening the strings, he pursed his lips and opened the leather bag enough that he could see inside.

There was only a moments hesitation before he moved to close the door to his office so that no one could happen in on him without knocking first. He then sat down on the floor feeling a definite bout of rare childishness. His legs crossed, he dumped the contents of the bag on the floor. Small silver metal jacks scattered over the carpet. Nathan picked up the blue rubber ball and bounced it, picking up a jack and then catching the ball. As a child this had been his favorite toy mostly because it was easily hidden from anyone who would try to take it away. A nostalgic grin spread on his lips as he repeated the play, snatching up another jack and catching the ball.

Peter had been over at his apartment trying to untwist the timeline and figure out where things had gone wrong so that he could fix things in his world without messing things up in this world too badly. He decided to take a break and talk to Nathan, see if he could help him figure some things out. He walked over to Nathan's new office, going invisible then phasing through the door. He faded into sight, smirking at Nathan playing jacks.

"Decided you needed a break too?" Peter said with a slight grin.

Looking up to Peter, Nathan's eyes were wide as if he'd just been caught doing something he shouldn't be. After a moment, he relaxed and nodded. "Do you remember when you were little and I tried to teach you to play jacks? You hated it. In hindsight I think jacks isn't that entertaining for most children anymore. But I remember one of your letters when I was in the military, you promised to play jacks with me if I came home." He grinned just a little. "Bribery at its finest."

The memory hung thick in the air, almost tangible. Nathan shook his head, his eyes narrowing slightly in thought. "We never did that."

Peter glanced around the room then furrowed his brow. After a moment he shrugged and sat down on the floor across from Nathan. "I've got some time and I need a break. Might as well try it now. What's the saying? No time like the present."

For a moment, Nathan looked skeptically to the future version of his brother looking for a catch. But then gradually his features softened and a small grin tugged at the corners of his lips. He dropped the two jacks he was holding and then picked them all up in a clump only to drop them again to let the metal pieces scatter between them. "No cheating." He warned somewhat teasingly and then held the blue rubber ball out to Peter and winked. "But you can go first."

Peter smirked and shrugged out of his jacket and tossed it into a chair. He took the ball from Nathan and bounced it experimentally at first. "It's not any fun if I cheat. Too easy," he told him. And it was true. If Peter chose to use his powers, especially this version of him so incredibly confident with his powers, the game would be over without any effort exerted at all. Finally he bounced the ball and scooped up a couple of jacks, catching the ball when it came down.

"You think beating me at my game will be easy?" Nathan asked teasingly. He lifted his eyebrows and tilted his head to shake it. "I'm a professional. How many did you get?" He nodded, jutting his chin out in the direction of Peter's fisted hand.

Peter opened his hand, showing Nathan the two jacks he'd picked up. He handed the ball off too him. "I don't think it'll be easy, as long as I don't use my powers." He'd never really played jacks as a kid. He'd always had comic books or cars or something else.

Arching a brow and casting Peter a small grin, he took the ball. "Hrmm twoooo..." He said both words long and drawn out for emphasis and then pursed his lips thoughtfully as he took the ball. It wasn't traditionally how jacks was played, not the sequential one then two then three and so on, but he decided that beggars couldn't be choosers. It was fun just to play, especially with Peter (any version). Since they were going for a free-for-all, as it were, he eyed the jacks on the floor in a different way. The corners of his lips pulled into a small grin when he spotted a clump of what looked like four jacks. One of them was about two inches away and he decided to go for the tricky move to get five. Bouncing the ball, he scooped up the jacks in a swoop and scoop motion before catching the ball again.

His grin grew to a rare full one that carried an even rarer air of childishness. Looking up to his brother, he uncurled his fingers to reveal the five jacks and the ball. "And since there's only three left, I win." He looked thoroughly pleased. Of course, wining at anything always pleased him. "Was it as much fun for you as it was for me?" He doubted it, but then Peter hadn't been fond of the game from childhood on. He had been more apt to make the jacks landmines or missiles.

Peter smirked and shrugged. "It was good spending time with you. Regardless of what we were doing." They were close in the future. Peter hadn't lied about that but they were different. Peter didn't need someone to take care of him and he was more confident about everything. He stood up and leaned against the wall, arms crossed over his chest. "Thanks for letting me play with you."

Getting up off of the floor also, Nathan moved to Peter and nodded. He put a hand on his shoulder and squeezed lightly. "Thanks for playing at all." There was a beat of silence before Nathan pulled his hand away, reminding himself that this wasn't his Peter. "Now go find my brother." Peter nodded and within a few seconds he had disappeared.
