A companion piece to
this [Heaven & Hell]
There’s only a pane of glass separating them. Glass he knows he could break with the strength he has now. The rain pours over him, soaking his clothes and making his hair drip in his eyes. It’s longer now because he was letting it grow out for her. She’s getting ready to go somewhere and he thinks she’s never been more beautiful. He’s not sure if absence makes the heart grow fonder or not but he’s certain it makes her prettier. Watching her makes everything easy and that much harder at the same time. For whole heart beats he can forget how much he hurts and then he’ll remember he’s only there to watch and the pain sears up his spine and radiates outward until he’s certain it’s going to consume him. His breath catches when she walks over to the glass and he knows he’s been found out. It takes every bit of control and concentration he’s got to keep from falling out of the sky and to stay invisible. She doesn’t want to see him and he knows that. She presses her hand to the glass and he knows it is the closest he will get to touching her again so he presses his hand against hers.
I could break it. I could break it. I could break it. I could break it. I could break it
It is the only thought running through his mind and he focuses on it because if he doesn’t he will break the glass and she will be in his arms. Where she doesn’t want to be. Someone calls from the hall and pulls her away from him and he wants to scream. He wants her back, her hand pressed against him. Just glass separating them.
