Peter's phone had drifted in and out of service on the drive back to New York City. Once he'd gotten there he was so focused on getting to the hospital to try and save Hiro that he didn't check his voicemail until after he realized the man had disappeared. "I was starting to get used to it," Sasha admitted quietly, focusing on reading his reaction while he looked over her chart. She'd already had all of this spelled out for her. It was scary, but everyone was more optimistic than she was. They threw encouraging facts at her and tried to tell her that she'd become a happy statistic or something. She was tuning it out. "What happened to you?"

Peter put the file back and sat down on the bed, his arm going around Sasha's shoulders and carefully scooting over onto the bed. "It wasn't that big a deal. Noah and I found a healer so I could grab a power to help Hiro."

So he wasn't going to tell his pregnant and having contractions wife that he'd been shot. Sue him. He thought it was kind of for the best especially since he was absolutely fine.

"It looks like a big deal," she insisted, staring at his shirt. Not only did it have a hole in it, it had blood on it. His blood, obviously. She was starting to understand why he hadn't picked up his phone. "Today sucks if your last name is Petrelli."

"I've had worse days," Peter assured her. He leaned over and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I'm fine. I've got healing and our baby is going to be fine."

Sasha thought it over, shaking her head out of concern more than anything else. "She's going to be little, Peter. They said they don't want to give me anything to help her along, but what if her lungs aren't fully developed? She'd be what, five pounds, if that?"

"They'll incubate her. She'll have to have some breathing treatments but she's going to be okay. You may be stuck here for a little while but at this point, every week counts. We'll figure this out," Peter promised. "This isn't the worst thing that could happen. You'll see."

He was more worried than he wanted to let on but he had to believe that both Lexie and Sasha were going to be alright. He couldn't let himself accept anything else.

"I'm already tired of it," she complained quietly, leaning into him. "What if she can't breathe on her own? The shot they gave me might slow things down for a week. That's not much time."

"If she can't breathe on her own, they'll help her until she can," Peter answered, his arm wrapping a little tighter around Sasha.

"She shouldn't have these problems. She's just a baby," Sasha whispered. An unborn one, at that. This was supposed to be the easy part, and they were in the final stretch. She was still shocked that they were sitting here. "I'm sorry, Peter."

Peter gave her a confused look and shook his head. "What are you sorry for? You don't have anything to apologize for at all."

"I should have listened to you," she said simply, as if it was obvious. "I should have stayed home and ate more vegetables and not worked for so long. You were right."

"No, Sasha," Peter said a little sharply but he wanted her very aware that this was not her fault. "No. You didn't do this. Nothing you did caused this at all. It just happens sometimes. This is one of those times."

"No, it happens when you do something wrong. I did something wrong," Sasha insisted, trying to stay calm. She hadn't even had a chance to cry about this yet, with Nathan and his mother running around and trying to make sure that she had everything she needed. "It was me."

"Sasha, look at me," he tilted her chin up so that her eyes met his. "No. You didn't do anything wrong. This just happened and sometimes it does just happen."

"Yeah, it just happens when the kid has an idiot for a mother," she mumbled, pulling away and lowering her head against his shoulder. She wiped away the tears before they could fall and sighed. "I want to go home."

Peter cupped his hand against her head and placed a kiss to her forehead. "You aren't an idiot, Sasha. Far from it. I love you and I promise, I'll take you home as soon as they say it's safe."
