He wants to call. He always wants to call. Surprisingly there are still a number of payphones around. There are also disposable cell phones and pay by the month. The problem is that the amount of cash he has on hand is in short supply and he meant it when he told the others they had to leave their old lives behind. All it takes is one charge on his credit card. He can get away fast enough but if they know he’s contacting her, that puts her in more danger. That puts Henry in danger. Without Henry, putting Sasha in danger is remotely acceptable to him. There are places she can go, people she can stay with that can protect her.
He wants to call and he knows he can’t. It’s not just about protecting her; regardless of what he says. She makes him want to tell the world it can save itself. She makes him want to give up the entire world and he’d do it, without a second thought. He’s not even sure he’d regret or at least he wouldn’t regret it until it was far too late. He knows the world needs him though and while that sounds incredibly narcissistic, he’s pretty sure it’s true. They’ll all let Nathan run over them. He knows what a steam roller his brother (make that ex) is. And it’s not just Nathan this time. He’s got the US government behind him. Peter can’t leave that up to chance. He knows where it goes. He’s visited that future before and his children were hunted for the abilities they had.
He won’t do that. Not for her, not for Henry. No matter how much he wants to.
He watches couples from the roof. It’s Valentines Day and he’s half afraid that by the time, he gets the world saved, she won’t be there to go back to. A bitter smirk twists his lips at that thought. The future he’d seen would be a moot point anyway.
But just in case…
He can’t call. He has to save the world.
