[One thing that's always a bad idea to do: give a tree man something that is typically fine for humans.Case in point, just about anything they stuck him with during his stay with the Malnosso. Yeah, it's one thing to have to deal with cells-hello, unpleasant memories-but dealing with drug poisoning, too? This day couldn't get any more hideous for ( Read more... )

don't give trees people drugs, in bad shape, confused about life and all that jazz

[after promising Jack she'd lay low she's not speaking into the journal...but she can write]

I don't know that it's about believing good comes out of everything. But [there's a pause as she thinks out her response before writing] it's believing that there's more potential for good than there is for the rest.

[he sounds terrible, though, so now is not the time for "believe in the good of humanity"] It doesn't make the bad okay, though.

Are you alright?

[not sure which thing he's addressing there, really, but he continues in a shaky handwriting]

[150 years... He's not sure which side is winning yet, the good or the bad. They're pretty damn tied up, as far as he knows.]

Yes.

[she has to be sure. The people who do these things to them... they can't win]

It's just really hard to see when the rest are the ones right in front of you.

Do you need help?

[At that question, he feels himself curl more into himself, but he keeps his hand and pen on the paper, regardless. Ian's not the type to bother others about his well-being, and he makes no exception here.]

[it could be more than he wants to talk about. He might not trust her. Or he might be telling the truth. Either way, Jilly isn't one to pry]

It was hard at first, but I tried to greet everyone with a smile. Be there if they wanted to talk. And, most of the time, people let you connect. And they turn out to be better than you could ever have expected.

[it's just, when they were bad they were so, so awful]

[ow, ow, ow, ow--it's one thing to feel a short moment of pain and then heal up like it never happened, but the kind that lingers something fierce? It's the worst thing.

But he just breathes, and then waits until he's steady again.]

how can you tell when they're the good ones?

Sometimes you just get a feeling...like you can or can't trust someone.

A good way to tell is if you have time to see how they treat other people. If they're being mean to others around them, they probably won't stay nice to you. Even if they start out kind.

[there's a soft laugh that's recorded, though she keeps writing] ...So maybe you need someone to help. Be an extra pair of eyes to tell you when to trust your instincts and when not to. You don't have to figure it all out on your own.

I know that's the only way I made it. I was lucky. I had friends who could show me how good people could really be.

That's what people have said. And there are people who've gone home and come back.

We just have to hope.
