This is what has been going on this week:
Tuesday: During 4th period today, my phone started ringing. When I looked at it, it said that I had a missed call from Pappaw and Mammaw. That confused me, because I didn't think they had my cell number. They had left a voice message, so I listened to that as soon as I could. It was actually my mom, saying that if my car didn't start (it's been acting weird lately) that she would be at Mammaw and Pappaw's house and to just call there. In my mind I thought that it was weird that she was over there before 4:30, but then I thought that maybe she was just taking a half day and planting some flowers.
When I got home, she was already home. As soon as I saw her face I knew something had happened. "Pappaw is in the hospital. He blacked out while driving and had an accident, so they're keeping him there overnight for opservation." I was stunned. They just got home from Missouri yesterday, it just didn't make sense. Right after she told me that, she told me that Aunt Judy is in the hospital in North Carolina. As soon as she said that Aunt Judy called, so I took my chance to call John.
My mom and I went around town tieing up the loose ends from the accident. First we stopped by the Police Station to find out where the car is. One of my dad's old friends from the Department saw my mom and I and rushed out to talk to us. He told us that the wreck happened on US 40. He said that he had crossed four lanes of traffic, hit a sign, and ended up in some guy's yard. At the time my mom and I thought that the accident had happened in town, so we were scared that he had blacked out from the Courthouse to the East side of town. My dad's friend told us that the car was at Jenkins..so we went there.
It was a mess. When I saw the car I almost burst out in tears. It's totaled. Their almost perfect '97 Buick with only 20,000 miles on it was trash. I got Pappaw's IU hat out of the car and a few bills that he was going to pay. There was glass everywhere..I couldn't get the drivers side door open, so I had to crawl through the side. Then we went to see Pappaw.
He was still in the ER, waiting for a room. He looked so weak and old lying there in the hospital bed. He smiled when I walked in and I had to hold back tears when I looked in his eyes and saw the pain he was in. He looked like an older version of my dad, and that's what really got me. He just kept asking about Mammaw and if she was okay (she is bed fast and can't do much for herself). His face was scratched up and he asked us if we knew what had happened. We told him that he was heading West on 40, blacked out, crossed over four lanes of traffic, hit a road sign, then went into a ditch, became airborn, the car on its side, until he hit a telephone pole, which righted the car, and then he landed a foot away from a guy working on his truck in his driveway. Pappaw's eyes teared up and all he said was, "It could have been so much worse."
Wednesday: Nothing changed...Pappaw was still in hospital. Mom stayed with Mammaw for the second night.
Thursday: They've moved Pappaw to St. Vincent. Dad has been with him all night. Mom is staying with Mammaw for the third night in a row. It is really starting to wear her out. Aunt Judy is coming home. That will help some.
Everybody is stressed, and it is beginning to show.
Friday: Again, nothing has changed. Pappaw is still in the hospital. Mom is staying with Mammaw for the fourth night in a row. Aunt Judy should be in town late tomorrow night. Dad has been Pappaw all day...and is still there as I type this.
If you pray, please do so for my Pappaw and our family. We need patience, strength, and courage that everything will turn out okay.
I'm sorry that I won't be able to see you guys again this weekend, but a lot has happened...and I hope you can understand.
Pray hard, and pray often.
