RSS feeds...

You may not know this, but LJ uses a technology called RSS to let you know when a friend has made a new post. You can use a program like FeedDemon or Google Desktop to subscribe to an RSS feed.

Now that I can reasonably assume that you have some idea of what I'm talking about, you can view the RSS feed for my LJ at:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/my_stro
