my mother was in town today for a work seminar, so after her class was out we met up for lunch. she brought with her a goody bag full of little things for an early birthday present. i sorted though the array of gifts and beneath the candies and kitchen gadgets was a small box wrapped in purple tissue paper. a gift from my grandmother, or as i call her, maw maw. i opened it and inside was a pair of gold earrings i immediately recognized. they're her favorite, she wore them all the time, ever since i can remember. when i was younger and she used to pick me up, i would always reach up to her ears to dangle the golden tassels, always commenting on how much i liked them. she always joked about how she would leave them to me in her will but for some reason decided now was an opportune time to give them to me. i called her later to ask about the gesture, and thank her of course, and she said she never planned on dying so 21st birthday was as good a time as ever for them. ha.
i had never known before, but i learned a special story behind the jewelry. the earrings have come all the way from Greece, a gift for what would have been my great, great aunt margret, only she died before i could meet her. she had a life partner who was Greek and gave her the earrings as a gift, and years later they were given to my grandmother, who loved them as well. now they belong to me and i will wear them until it's time to give them away to someone i love.
so, if you all couldn't guess, today was a great day. i got to have a delicious lunch, receive a very special gift, and cuddle on the couch watching tv with my mommy until just a short time ago. it really really feels good to do that you know. like, you can never be too old to have your mother hold you and play with your hair. for those of you who may not have experienced that in a while, i suggest you set up a time very soon.
(sigh) all is well.
