v. candles: a source of light

The Avatar, Toph had heard many times before, was the spirit of the world. He was the light that shone for others to follow, and set the morale standards for the rest of the world. Many would follow the Avatar to the end of the earth. He was their candle, they said solemnly; their guiding force.

Toph, though, often wondered who was their to guide Aang. Surely even the Avatar recquired a clap on the shoulder, or a few words of advice. More often than not, Katara was the one to provide it. She was Aang's pillar of support. But Katara couldn't be there all of the time, and Toph knew that Aang eventually had to learn to stand on his own.

Still, it couldn't hurt to have a little guidance every now and then.

Perhaps Katara or Zuko will fill that role, she muses. Perhaps even Sokka will step up to the plate. Yet Toph is unsure that they will be strong enough to tell Aang exactly what he has to do, and hold nothing back. They will try to bear his burden for him; Aang must be with someone who can share it equally.

The two pieces slide together with a small click, and before she knows, Toph has decided that she will be that person.

A/N: Not my best, but I really wanted to get something down. :) And I also wanted to highlight this aspect of Taang. Plus, all of my previous drabbles focused on Aang. Now, Toph gets her spotlight! :D
