I had a conversation earlier today that has been nagging at me and leaving me feeling persistently irritated. I want to go to bed, but I know it's going to keep me awake. Possible solution: brief, cheesy post about the (inanimate) things that have made me happy over the past few days.
Theme of the week: rhythms.
Rhythm 1: kayak rhythms. The rhythm of the paddle strokes, the rhythm of the sound made by the paddle wings against the water, the rhythm of the waves when I sit in the middle of the lake and drift for awhile.
Rhythm 2: bicycle rhythms. The rhythms of the pedal-cycles as I puff up a hill, and the rhythms of involuntarily breathing in time with my foot movements.
Rhythm 3: that awesome berimbau introduction to Joan Osborne's "St. Teresa," to which I'm totally addicted. Let me know if you want to hear the song and arrangements can be made. Or you can punch it into youtube and the music video will pop up. The very first instrument in the song is a berimbau.
Rhythm 4: berimbau in general. Specifically, my berimbau, and how my playing is beginning to improve, even though I think I may eventually have to sacrifice the tip of my left pinky to the berimbau gods due to lack of circulation (seriously, the tip of the pinky was not designed to support and balance that much weight). I like tapping out complex rhythms based only on the hits and strokes that I'm good at, totally bracketing the elements of berimbau-playing that are difficult for me. This will not help me improve, but it's fun.
Rhythm 5: capoeira, in general. Queda de rins, rabo de raya, negativa, rabo de raya, negativa, rabo de raya, negativa, pé do pelo frente, negativa, rabo de raya, negativa, rabo de raya, negativa, rabo de raya, queda de rins. That means nothing to anyone reading this, unless any of you are closet angoleiros. This is my in-joke with my livejournal and I like it that way.
This totally worked - I feel better now. Time to go to bed.
