When I watch or read things, many times I can't be quite as objective as I might be once a bit of time has passed. I tend to allow myself to become immersed in the story or emotion, words or images. So, of course, my opinion may change regarding the following. Though I suspect not.
The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) is absolutely the most lovely film I've seen in a very long while. It is exquisite in so many different ways--writing and characters, movement, structure, acting, directing. A truly near-perfect film I'd been waiting a very long time to see.
(Okay. In fact, here's a bit of objective criticism: There was one very small item which was, perhaps, a bit more heavy-handed than was necessary. But I feel it was similar to JKR and her adverbs--the writer/director wanted to be certain the audience understood and actually witnessed a character's comprehension. It wasn't required but certainly did no harm to the movie as a whole.)
Even if you don't normally like foreign films, even if this doesn't sound the sort of movie you'd choose, I urge you to go see it. . . . Trust me on this one.
And the last line . . . Very nice.
