i. I know you want to be my salvation

There is a hallway. A boy. A girl. He spills his secrets with a vulnerability that she unwillingly admires because laying open weakness, especially to someone like her, shows either a great deal of stupidity or a large amount of courage.

For a second she thinks, maybe this is the one who’ll finally understand.

And that is how it begins.

ii. The truth is going to change everything

They will never work. She knows this. He is too stubborn, too judgemental, too caught up in all that Serena Serena Serena nonsense. That doesn’t stop her from feeling something akin to pride when he lies through his teeth so convincingly that even she feels inclined to believe him.

At least he makes a good co-conspirator.

iii. It’s been a long slow collision

When they graduate it seems like all that high-school drama disappears overnight. Unsurprisingly, they end up at Yale together and despite what Blair may tell him, she’s somewhat comforted by his presence in this new social setting.

They exchange sarcastic quips between classes and make cynical observations while Serena is talking the bartender into another round of free drinks.

One night she slips up and introduces him as her friend.

Are you sure that's all? an internal voice asks her. Vaguely, she wonders when her conscience started sounding like Dan Humphrey.

iv. But you’re untouchable, burning brighter than the sun

There is a night that neither of them speak of. They blame it on the alcohol, on their recently failed relationships, on anything other than the truth because that is too much for them to handle. Funnily enough, neither ever mentions the word regret. Both royalty in the unfailing wit department, they have an understanding that sometimes words are not enough. And that sometimes they are simply too much.

It hangs over them, like a looming storm and she would think about it more often only she has another social hierarchy to climb and Manhattan’s most eligible bachelor to snag. She doesn’t have any more time to waste on Dan Humphrey. At least, that is what she tells herself.

It irks her that he seems completely unaffected.

v. You and I have something different

Her life reads like a cheesy teen drama- the good boy, the bad boy, she’s had her heart shattered by both. But that is the past and she is nothing if not resilient. After all, look how far she has come.

She is a step away from the fairy tale. A penthouse on the Upper East Side with an army of maids at her disposal and more money than she could possibly spend in her own life time. All she has to do is say yes. Yes, to a man who is the closest thing to New York royalty yet ignites as much passion in her as a sale at Wal-Mart.

It is a his annoying voice that asks her, this is what you really want?

So, instead, she finds herself outside a Brooklyn apartment, knocking on his door.

‘What happened to the date with Prince Charming?’ he smiles, a sardonic twist to his lips.

‘Haven’t you heard?’ She tosses flippantly over her shoulder as she breezes in. ‘I don’t do happy endings any more.’
