He knew he shouldn’t have been there.
Sitting on the top row of the seating at the side of the pool casually reading a physics book, Matthew Bellamy tried not to draw any attention to himself.
He wasn’t actually reading a damn word of it but he sat there anyway. The real reason he was there was because it was the swim teams practise hour. More importantly, Dominic Howard's practise hour.
It was stupid really because Dominic had never even acknowledged Matthew's existence let alone spoken one word to him.
They were so unlike it was unreal. Dominic was friendly and out going, head of the football team, captain of the swim team. He was a general golden god compared to Matthew's pale skeletal form.
Matthew pondered that it wasn’t so bad. He was captain of the chess team, excelled at playing the piano and was the highest graded at all the sciences they were studying. Truth be known he'd finished all his course work three weeks after getting it even though they had been told they had three months to complete it. So with all the free time he found himself with, he chose to spend most of it here.
" Howard best time yet. Why don't you all hit the showers." Called out the coach before disappearing through the double doors to the gym.
Matthew was far too distracted now, watching Dom gracefully stride the length of the pool in tight fitting black shorts, so completely dripping wet, that he'd failed to notice three of the other boys from the swim team creep up the stairs.
" Fancy a swim Bellamy." Sniggered Alex.
" I think he does." Chimed in Tom with a goofy grin on his face.
Matthew had no time to react as they grabbed him out of his seat like he was a feather and carried him down the stairs.
He thrashed and wailed, pleading for them to let him go but it was all to no avail. They laughed hysterically as they threw him fully clothed into the deep end.
Matthew sunk like a stone. Never a strong swimmer, he gasped for air and only succeeded in filling his lungs with more water. The pool lights took on a beautiful shimmer through the blue as he started to slip away from consciousness. Just then a strong hand grabbed his wrist and pulled him back towards the surface.
Coughing and spluttering, the air burnt his lungs. Who ever it was brushed the hair out of Matthews eyes and tucked the sopping wet strands behind his ears.
" Better?" they asked softly. Matthew still couldn’t see properly, the chlorine stinging his eyes and the tears pouring from all the coughing, forcing him to scrunch his eyes tightly shut.
" Oh Howard, my hero." Squealed Tom sarcastically as Alex and Nathan giggled like a pack of hyenas.
Matthew's eyes snapped open and sure enough bobbing around in front of him was Dominic. His blonde hair starting to curl from the water and framing his face perfectly. Matthew was star struck.
" You gonna be okay now?" he asked, sincerity clearly visible in his eyes.
Matthew just nodded as Dominic swam to the steps and walked away. Matthew still hadn't moved, desperately treading water as he recovered from the shock of it all.
" Dumb ass." Growled Alex at Matthew before following Dominic into the changing rooms, his sheep Nathan and Tom following close behind.
Matt pulled himself from the pool. Shaking, soaking wet and cold through, he grabbed his bag from his seat and ran all the way home.
Alone.

Walking into his bedroom, Matthew dropped his bag onto the floor. Standing in front of the mirror he peeled off his still sopping clothes and dumped them in a pile on the floor. Sitting back on his bed stark naked he tried not to sob.
'Why do they hate me so much?' he questioned. He caught his own reflection again in the mirror. Skinny, pale and so fail looking. If he got any paler he'd be see through. At school he already felt see through, especially by Dom and his stupid friends.
He flopped into the pillows and burst out crying. His tears doing nothing to ease the pain. He contemplated getting dressed but saw there was no point. His grandma wouldn’t be home for hours yet. He was all alone. He slid his hand under the bed and pulled out a small wooden box. To anybody else it would look like a trinket box and would be left alone. To Matthew it was temporary relief from all this pain.
Sitting cross legged and leaning against the headboard he flicked open the lid. He stared at the shiny new blade, he knew deep down how much it hurt. It wasn’t the first time and he wanted it to hurt. Grabbing the towel he had used to dry his hair from the shower he'd had this morning, he placed it across his lap.
With the whole world blurring from the tears it was hard to focus. The searing pain made him gasp as he took the first cut. Heady pain clouding his thoughts he smiled through his sobs. The warm red fluid calmed him as it ran across his arm and dripped quickly onto the towel. The unexplainable balance between the pain in his heart and the pain in his arm, it hurt and it felt perfect at the same time. As he finished his last cut he dropped the blade onto the bed and lay back to bleed it out.

For the next week he went to school just like every other time he'd done it before. He sat through lessons he hated. It was like the more he cut, the more he hated the world. He hid his arm by wearing long sleeved shirts under his school shirts, refused to ever do swimming and tried to get out of sport all together.
The coach wouldn’t back down on Friday though and practically threatened to drag Matt out on the field in his school uniform if he had too. For a whole hour he had him running around like an idiot. The fact Dom was in his tiny yellow shorts wasn’t even enough to make him feel any better about it. He bloody hated sport and that was that. When the coach finally allowed them to go back to the changing rooms, Matt couldn’t shower. God help anyone should have seen his arm.
Everyone had left before Matthew finally decided it was safe enough to risk it.
" Matt?" came a small voice, as a young boy popped his head into the communal showers.
" Shit Marley. You scared the hell out of me." He said grabbing his towel and trying to cover his modesty. Marley looked dumb struck.
" What the fuck have you done to your arm?" he practically whispered.
Matthew snapped his arm behind his back.
" Nothing, it's a rash." He tried to lie, desperately. His heart hammering in his chest.
" Matt." It was all Marley had to say. He was his only friend at school and knew when Matthew was lying.
His eyes dropped to the floor as he extended his arm out towards Marley.
" Holy shit Matt, How longs this been going on for?" he asked softly clutching his friends shaking wrist as he inspected the deep red and scarring cuts littering Matthew's perfectly pale skin.
" Um a while." Matthew replied through gritted teeth.
Marley dropped Matt's wrist and bit down on his bottom lip before softly releasing it.
" You should get dressed." He murmured turning away and walking towards the gym door.
" Marley?" Matt called out " Don't tell anyone yeah? Marley?"
Marley just kept walking.

The next two days passed as they usually did. Matthew was mercilessly teased by Alex, Tom and Nathan, and Dominic still acted like he didn’t exist. Matthew just popped his headphones in and tried to grab lunch as fast as he could.
Grabbing a sandwich he left the cafeteria quickly and practically jogged into the science block.
Nobody was ever in the science block at lunch time and being as Matthew was head of the science club he'd got his very own key to the lab. Reaching the third flight of stairs he started rummaging around in his pocket for the key. As he neared the door he knocked one of his head phones out and that’s when he noticed it. The sound of footsteps behind him.
He glanced at his watch, lunch wouldn’t be over for another hour so if Alex, Nathan and Tom were about to lay into him he'd be in big trouble. Laying in your own blood for an hour should have been something Matthew was getting used to by now anyway.
Taking a deep breath he pulled out his headphones and turned to face them.
" Hey Matt can I have a word?"
" What?" Matt stuttered at the sight before him.
" Don't look so shocked. I'm not going to jump you or nothing it's just I need to ask you something."
Matthew officially felt like he was going to have a heart attack. The person stood before him so calmly was none other that Dominic Howard himself.
" I…um… What?" Matthew repeated dumbly.
" Are you going into the lab?" he asked smirking slightly.
" Yes." Matthew replied blankly, fumbling to get the key to open the door.
He stood silently as Matthew let them into the lab. Walking towards the work stations Matt dropped his bag on to the floor and then dragged a stool in front of the desk to sit down.
" So?" he asked, trying to be calm and not blush even though for the first time in four years he had the full and complete attention of the thing he'd so desperately admired.
" Show me your arm." He said sternly standing over Matt in a menacing sort of way.
" What?" Matt yelped completely flabbergasted.
" You heard me Matthew, show me your fucking arm." He snapped.
Matthew felt the tears swell to the surface. He desperately tried not to show Dom how much he was scaring him.
" No." he said shakily.
" What?" said Dom disbelieving he'd even just heard Matt right.
" I said No. It's my fucking arm and I'll do what I like with it, if it's not too much trouble."
" So it's true then." Said Dominic softly as he sat on the desk in front of Matt.
Matthew double blinked. He'd just outted himself completely by accident. Then it dawned on him that if Dom was asking questions then he already knew.
" Fucking Marley." Matthew muttered under his breath.
" Look Matt just show me your arm yeah." Dominic asked again reaching out towards him. Matthew looked around the room, for what he didn’t know but he did anyway.
" Seriously? "
" Yes Matthew, seriously."
He double blinked again and then rolled up his right sleeve.
" See nothing to worry about." He said showing of his gloriously pale flesh.
" Now the other arm." Dom said coldly.
" Oh." Said Matt, Dominic was obviously smarter than he gave him credit for.
Matthew slowly rolled up his left sleeve revealing everything he'd been desperately hiding.
" Holy shit Matthew." Dominic squealed.
" Funny " Said Matt blankly " Marley said the same thing."
" This is no laughing matter Matt." Said Dominic grabbing him hard by the wrist. " You should see a doctor."
" Oh thanks a lot, I'm not mad you know, just a little pissed off, actually a lot pissed off. Actually Dom I don’t care. It's just something else for you and your dip shit mates to pick on me for now isn't it." He said snatching his arm back and pulling the sleeve down.
" Whoa Matt. I'll have you know I've never picked on you, so get you facts straight yeah."
" Oh yeah I remember now, you just stand there as they lay into me because as far as your concerned I don’t exist do I."
" Matt." Dom wailed grabbing Matt's arm before Matt ran off.
" Ow let go of me."
" Not until you let me do something." Dominic pleaded.
" Do what Dom, do fucking what?" Matt yelled on the brink of tears.
" Let me help you."
" Ha."
Dom's eyes closed for the briefest of moments before opening again as he sighed. A tear threatening to escape him right there.
" You mean it don't you?" said Matt slightly amused by it all.
Dominic just nodded sombrely.
" Okay."
" What?"
" I said okay, I'll let you help me. On one condition, you can never, ever tell anyone about this. Okay?"
" Deal."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" Ow." Matt squealled as Dom carefully wiped more iodine solution on to his tattered cuts with a cotton swab.
" Well if you'd keep still it wouldn't hurt so much." Dominic quipped back, dipping the cotton wool ball back into the small dish of antiseptic solution, that Matt had finally relented and allowed him to take from the store cupboard.
" Its just it fucking stings." He whinned.
Dom just raised an eyebrow at him as if to say ' and doing it in the first place hurt less?'
Matt tutted and turned his head away. Holding his wrist, Dom covered another cut.
" Right I've had enough." Yelled matt snatching his arm away.
" You said you'd let me help you. " said Dom grabbing his wrist and carring on.
Matt growled " You're enjoying this aren't you."
" No Matt I'm not." Yelled Dom in his own defence " And I swear to god if I look next week and you've done it again, I'll kill you myself."
Just then Dominic's phone rang. He dropped the cotton wool ball on to the wooden side and answered it as calmly as he could.
" S'up."
" Where the fuck are you Howard?" came the instantly reconisable voice of Alex.
" I'm busy" Dom deadpanned as Matt started to roll his sleeve back down.
" Oh yeah? Chelsea Brenner finally give in then."
Even through the phone Matt could hear Alex's vile smirk.
Dom sighed and looked up just in time to see Matt's sad eyes hit the floor.
" To be honest Alex, No, she didn't."
Before he'd even finished his sentence Alex chimed in with
" Awww poor Dom, looks like it's another case of blue balls for you then mate."
Much to the raucous laughter of Tom and Nathan in the background. Dom just sighed.
Matt shook his head and jumped off the side grabbing his bag.
" Wait don't go."
Matt was shocked as Dom grabbed his shoulder and span him back around to face him.
" Please."
" Who the fuck are you talking to Dom?" questioned Alex loudly.
Dom held up one finger to Matt as a warning not to say anything or maybe it was wait a second before he smiled widely.
" Your favorite punch bag Alex why? Wanna come and join in? " Dom quipped loudly.
Matt's face dropped. Dom mouthed ' don't panic.' his eyes wide and sympathetic.
" What? Fucking Matt the prat. What the fuck could you possibly have to say to him other than fuck off."
More hysterical laughter.
" Actually I was about to ask" he said before dropping the phone from by his face " Do you wanna come and sit with me while I play. I've got drum practise and maybe afterwards we could grab a coffee and talk properly?"
The sound from the phone loosly gripped by his hip exploded. Matt nearly passed out.
" Really?" Matt squeaked. Dominic smiled widely and nodded.
" Okay?" Matt said completely unsure of himself.
" You can't be serious." Came the loud booming voice as Dom raised the phone once again towards his ear.
" Bye Alex" and then he hung up " Prick." He cursed under his breath shoving his phone into his pocket.
" Sorry about that." Dominic said softly.
" Matt the prat? Thanks" Matt said sadly.
" Hey" said Dom placing his hand on Matt's face and tipping his chin up so there eyes met " I never, ever called you that okay."
Matt nodded softly and they both left the lab.
Together.
