I actually have the same problem, but I'm narrowing it down by weeding out those items that I could research myself.
I've got a couple items that when I dug around, I found out enough info on it to satisfy my curiosity about what it might be worth. I had learned a lot just running a booth in an antique mall for a year, Got to see what moved & what did not.
So far my top contenders are an Anglo-Japanese Plate that looks something like this:
Also a very unique brass corkscrew commemorating the anniversary of Napoeon's Coronation as King of italy in Milan on the 26 of May, 1805. I suspect it was made in 1905... who knows. It has a medallion as a finial of the corkscrew with a picture of his bust on one side and the Iron Crown of Lombardy on he other side. Solid Brass Double Lever. Bought it at an estate sale.
Item 3 is an Alexander Backer plaster statuette of a medieval lady in a victorian interpretation of norman costume - Bought it at an antique mall when another buyer failed to pay for it who had put it on hold. See Icon...

It has a chip in it but it's very lovely and was given to me as a gift.
