Go back to part one

The ball was to last for the three days, and Amu spent most of it being swept up in party games and dances with Prince Hokuto. Kukai had laughingly gone up and given his approval before pulling her away for a dance. A prince from a distant land wearing a yukata had also shown up, informing her that his name was Sanjou Kairi, his serious tone at odds with the crimson staining his cheeks. Even Nagihiko had danced with her, dressed in his crisp soldier’s uniform and waltzing her gracefully across the floor.

And in those three days, Amu could never seem to find the dark prince who had kissed her the first night. Conferring with Nagihiko had only led to frowns and threats of bodily injury at the dirtying of his princess’s pure lips. As Prince Hokuto and the other princes led her in dances that sparkled in the chandelier lights, her eyes always drifted toward the shadows, searching.

On the final day, Prince Hokuto led an absent-minded Amu to the outer garden that surrounded the ballroom.

“Princess Hinamori, ah no Princess Amu,” he started, pulling Amu’s attention toward him. “I know that we were set up by our parents, but I do really feel I’ve fallen in love with you. So I’m asking you now, as the future king of my country, will you marry me?”

Amu couldn’t breathe. She was being proposed to in person? She had supposed the marriage to be political, and any proposals would be done by courier, but this was quite a different situation. “Prince Hotori...” she began, not sure of what she was going to say. She had fallen in love with a prince who, like a stray cat, had wandered off?

“It’s Prince Tadase. Just Tadase.”

“Oh? Just Tadase, is it?” an amused voice came from a nearby tree. The dark prince she had been searching for dropped down to the grass below.

“It’s you!” gasped Amu at the same time Tadase growled furiously, “What are you doing here, Tsukiyomi Ikuto?”

Amu glanced at Tadase, confused at the lack of honorifics. Wasn’t he considered a prince as well? “Do you know him?”

Tadase, calming himself at the sight of Amu, explained, “His family is of minor nobility. He’s a prince only in name, his traitorous family tried to usurp our family’s crown!”

“Your family still won in the end, Tadase,” Ikuto cut in smoothly. “Why don’t you and the little princess here go back inside. She’s getting cold.” He pointed toward Amu, who really was beginning to shiver slightly.

Tadase, immediately chastened, offered his arm to Amu. “I’m sorry, princess. I did not realize there would be any disturbances out in the garden.”

Looking at Ikuto’s face, stubbornly turned away from the two of them, Amu decided on her next words carefully. “I’m sorry, Prince Hokuto. I will have to refuse.” At the twin looks of shock from both princes, she continued. “I refuse both your offer just now, and your proposal. I am truly sorry, but I don’t think I can marry you knowing that I am already in love with someone else.”

Tadase glanced between Ikuto and Amu, reading the unspoken atmosphere that surrounded them, and sighed. Eyes pained, Tadase gave Amu a tight nod and managed a small smile. “If you ever change your mind, you know where to find me.”

After Tadase’s return to the ballroom, Ikuto broke the silence. “Are you sure about this, princess? Don’t your parents want --” his hand gestured to the ballroom, and presumably to Tadase, “-- that for you?”

“Perhaps,” she said thoughtfully. “But what I said was the truth as well, Prince Tsukiyomi. I don’t believe I can marry someone without love.”

Dark blue eyes finally locked onto gold. “Then, will you marry me?”

A smile blossomed onto the pink-haired girl’s face. “Of course.”

In the next spring, Prince Tsukiyomi Ikuto was married to Princess Hinamori Amu. It turned out that Ikuto had in fact been disowned by his traitorous family after he had refused to assassinate Tadase, and so Ikuto simply moved to Amu’s castle after their marriage.

The royal Hinamori family (especially Ami) was pleased as it meant Amu did not have to leave. Tadase finally learned to trust Ikuto again, who had been his childhood friend, and all of the princes and Nagihiko became good friends.

“And they all lived happily ever after,” proclaimed Miki as she flipped the last page of her self-drawn manga.

“That’s so sweet!” cried Su, clapping her hands wildly. “Miki’s such a romantic.”

"Yay! Onee chan will stay with Ami forever!" cried Ami, imitating Su.

Ran frowned, jumping to her feet. “They would never do that! You’re only saying that because you have a crush on Yoru!”

“Ah that’s enough, you guys! I’m trying to study here!”
