The rental car moved through the darkness, the sun just barely starting to think about rising. In the driver's seat, Rick was taking another sip of some highly-questionable Mexican coffee, hoping they reached the border soon.

His wife's joke, a few hours earlier, about him wanting McDonald's, was still on his mind. At that hour, any coffee would be good. However, he was the one who wanted to get the early head start, so it was really his own fault.

Another hour and the hotel's restaurant would be open.

Next to him, staring out into the blackness, Rick's new bride watched the horizon. She hadn't seen such nothingness in years; not since before college. Chicago gave her a beautiful skyline, but she missed the wide open spaces.

"You with me?" Rick asked. Mel jumped slightly, then turned and smiled.

"Of course. Just thinking about... home." She turned back to the window and smiled as the black started to turn blue, followed by just the slightest hint of pink. "Hey," she said a moment later, "stop the car."

"You okay?" Rick frowned, automatically averting his eyes to the rear-view mirror.

"Yeah. Just stop. Please."

Rick slowed the car and pulled off, making sure there was plenty of room for any passing vehicles. Once the car was stopped, Mel unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door. Rick watched her for a moment, trying to figure out what she was doing.

"Mel?" he called after her, but realized she wasn't listening. He quickly flipped the key and worked out of his own harness before opening his door and climbing out. Moving around the car, Rick closed the few hundred feet between them and put his arm around Mel. "Hey," he said, leaning to look at her. "What's wrong?"

Mel shook her head and smiled. "Nothing. Just wanted to see this." She leaned into his hold and looked east again. Rick kissed her hair and followed her gaze. A moment later, he understood her request, as the sky turned a brighter shade of pink, then an odd yellow.

It didn't take more than a minute for the sun to peek over the horizon.

Once the sun was up, Mel looked over her shoulder and then turned in Rick's arms. "Thank you," she nodded.

"No, thank you," he said, kissing her forehead. "That was very cool."
